We'll put it this way from a person who has only just stated Exiting. I had never heard of the the 1925 thing although I had heard it said from the platform that the society never said the end of the world was in 1975. The UN debarcle I had never heard of either. In fact 99.9% of the things mentioned here I was totally unaware of. It wasn't until I actively started searching apostate sites that I found this all out plus a whole lot more. Most of the R&F have got absolutely no idea of anything that is going on. Unfortunately I was one of them. It would have to be a pretty major scandal, and it would have to be printed black and white on the front page of the watchtower before it would be accepted.

I agree with the 'personal experience' reason.

When the organisation hurts you deeply and personally.. when you feel let down by it, when you experience it's indifference towards you, ignored, marginalised, betrayed, lied too, deceived, when your own sense and intelligence are insulted again and again. That's when you have no choice but to step away. To remain would make you party to your own demise and destruction and madness.

It was the aggregate "personal experience" of decades under communism that led to its collapse in Europe. Dis-member succinctly outlines what many have similarly endured as Jehovah's Witnesses. The organization continues to dehumanize its members. What has kept it going has been the inertia on the part of the majority of its rank and file who simply cannot imagine life outside its confines. But I believe a critical mass will be reached eventually that will lead to the kind of revolt that will topple the cult. The unenlightened leadership of the current Governing Body may stoke the discontent we are hearing about. I would say that currently it is at a low simmer. However, the heat is increasing and that will eventually lead to a full, rolling boil among the publishers. I very much doubt that the current leadership is prepared for this, no more than the communist leaders of a generation ago were.

There's not one single thing that would wake up most JWs. Different personality types will have different triggers. For some, things that can be proved factually wrong through analysis (such as 607 and 1914) will do it. For others, it's doctrinal things rooted entirely in emotionalism or tradition such as beliefs about heaven or the trinity, or doctrinal flipflopping. Still others will be more affected by scandals such as the UN-DPI association or covering up child abuse. Others may be more affected by local problems in their own congregations. Some are so deeply entrenched and dependent on the religion that they will forgive any doctrinal or social shortcoming in the organisation.

I thought of something more important to this discussion, the scandal must be wide spread so everyone knows about it. Kingdom Halls can have some very wicked pedophiles in their Congregation, if one zealous father learns of the sex-offender and warn's another stupid brother who has made friends with Chester and his child porn collection, "stupid brother" runs to the elders and tell's them that "brother protect my children" is spreading gossip about Chester the Child Molesting Jehovah Witnesses!.

The Watchtower has put the fear into their limited intellect and frightened members to keep silent or face Jehovah's Judgement for speaking out against others. The Scandal has to be big enough, shocking enough to get the Jehovah's Witnesses to think which is hard to imagine. The Secretary has the local pedophile play with his daughters and invites him over to every meal possible, your not dealing with rational human beings. One elder's wife who according to her brother played doctor with her pedophile brother for years, in my opinion she would not care if her older brother who is a child rapist molested another child because he took her sensitivity to car for fellow children away when she was 14 to 16 years old. Her brother swears to Jehovah this P.O.s wife was having sex with her when she was 14-16 years old and he was 18-20, "Kissing Cousins" and she kept the raping of a young girl secret according to her brother.

I heard the elder's wife and the P.O. lambaste the victim of this woman's pedophile older brother by making up the wildest accusations against this child. Jehovah's Witnesses are not the most moral people, it's mock morality, it's a form of devotion practice in front of men, not for God. Why does the Watchtower always have to tell the world with their Magazines about their good works they are doing? The reason is simple, since the Watchtower is self-sparing to most of the World, any acts of mercy on a miniscule scale is going to be broadcast by their Media so people think the Watchtower is Christian. How often do you hear of the Watchtower coming to the aid of non-JWs or helping victims in Pakistan or India and Turkey during their big earthquake a year or so ago? I know Christendom did while JWs were eagerly looking for he help from the Red Cross! JWs run to the aid given by non-JWs faster than those who truly deserve the help. JWs from Bethel are self-sparing, they are selfish and greedy, really what good have they done to make this world a better place? They destroy the forest by wasting precious paper better spent for use on your anus after defecating. They waste fuel driving around in strange directions, standing out in front of coffee shops while real Christians are working on "missions and helping with dental work, surgery's for cleft-palate and eye disorders", instead we spend our money on handing out magazines better used to wipe our asses on!

I don't think any type of scandal will gain traction, think about the cobe and his wife, they are really f'ed up sexually with her older brother "Chester", the Organization is a Safe Harbor for Pedophiles to sail their dinghys around the Kingdom Hall when someone starts to worry the pedophile is creeping up to close, the pedophile can scream he is a victim of malicious gossip!

I agree with everyone that says a big scandal would never cause any to leave the org.

I do agree though that personal experiences cause ones to research and leave, I also agree it's all about the money, donating is being pushed hard now and likely tithing of some kind even if it is guilt driven to start with will cause many to leave.

A point was made on another thread about the fact that shunning was a reason why people stay in the org, but stop donating to the cause. How many closet non-believing JW's exist?

    Quendi:

Your post summed it up quite well. Even though they have survived past "scandals" and such, we can never say never when it comes to the religion. I think though that even if it ended there would be some small splinter group that would prevail somewhere! But, who cares? I am just glad I am no part of that nonsense anymore. So much stupidity there - I am surprised their heads don't explode.

    Violia:

On a personal level, you are right: it takes something aimed at our loved ones that makes people wake up and leave the religion.

Talk of pedophilia won't do it. In my opinion, many in the religion don't really believe the pedophilia UNLESS it is something they have witnessed. Otherwise, it is considered to be unsubstantiated rumors.

You are also correct that if the religion tried to institute tithing, many would head for the door. And, from what I have read here and there, it seems they are inching in that direction with their nervy pledge forms for various things.......Imagine the audacity of these hypocrites?? Here they told people not to get higher education or decent jobs and they think they are going to get strapped people to give yet more??? I feel sorry for anybody still trapped there.

I do believe that more and more are having these "personal experiences". What I really think is happening is many are using whatever they can to get out. Apathy and indifference is what will bring this and all religions to a screeching halt. Jws are tiny compared to Roman Catholic, Islam, hinduism and Mormonism. Many of these religions are suffering dwindling numbers due to apathy and indiferrence. The Org thinks that by tying the noose of control tighter it will combat this. However, like we see with children, when mother or father tighten their grip on rebellious teens, the teens disconnect further and further away. Religions, in the west, is all but a figure head losing control by the second.

The scandal that would get to most JW's leaving would have to be astronomical. Maybe it would take the entire Governing Body leaving for a non-extraditing country along with a pre-recorded press release on how "the truth" was just a lie. Even then, some would want to hold together figuring Satan was behind that treachery.

Luckily, it doesn't take all that for "some" to wake up. New light shakes some loose all the time.
