What kind of scandal would cause most JW to leave the "truth"?

Individuals leave the organization because of a series of events that affects them on a personal level.

The Org. is a high control group that attempts to restrict the information shared with the faithful. It demands loyalty and obedience. It forbids personal research.

While some argue that JW's continue to grow worldwide (based on published numbers), the reality is that many who are publishers are active primarily on paper reports.

The real danger is internal atrophy. The indicators of this decline are service hours, meeting attendance, meeting participation, financial support and reaching out for 'theocratic' privileges and responsibilities.

Q.: What kind of scandal would cause most JW to leave the "truth"?

A.: I note that you specify "most JWs" in your question. For an answer, I think we need to look at WATCHTOWER history and look to see what caused massive, large-scale defections in the past. Fortunately, WATCHTOWER history offers plenty of these kinds of incidents to examine.

"New Light" will never do it. Yes, SOME will leave as a result of the cognitive dissonance caused by some "New Light," but that will never be cause enough for "most JWs" to pack it in. Look at what a relatively small impact the UN scandal caused. Most JWs just shrug that off as a lie even though if they call the Bethel Service Desk, the Service Desk will CONFIRM that it happened.

So, to cut to the chase, I think the answer lies in one word: RUTHERFORD.

The GB are mortal men and like the Mickey Mouse Club, they have to bring in a new member from time to time. IF one of these future GB members proves to be a NEO-RUTHERFORD -- a self-centered sociopathic power-seeker -- THAT could be straw that breaks the camel's back for "most JWs."

Certainly WE of the Apostate Legion have no control over such an ascension. The next beast in the image of Judge Rutherford must arise from the chaotic 'sea' of official Dubdom, an organization by and for MEN. We need only remain vigilant, patiently waiting and watching for that Great Day.

When it happens, the WATCHTOWER will be shattered into hundreds if not thousands of fragments, many being, as there have been today, small home-based groups, but there will also be millions worldwide who will be wondering what to do now. Some will fall prey to almost anyone low enough to offer everlasting life in exchange for submission. Many others will try to make sense of the "new world" they now find themselves in.

That's what I think, and I'm sticking to it until I change my mind.

Anything can be excused within the scope of nu-light. No scandal is big enough to bring it down.

The biggest enemy of the organizatin has always been and continues to be TIME. None of us will likely be around by the time the organization crumbles apart, but it will at some point.

In a few decades, centuries, or more, none of the beliefs attached to the end of days will make any sense. The "Imminent end of this system of things" still somehow works in the days we live in, but even the Watchtower will not be able to "stretch" that much longer. I predict that in a couple of hundred years, the Watchtower organization will be nothing more than a reference in religious history books.

Ive always felt at least 2 or more members of the GB being busted for pedophilia would do it for most.

the internet and the free trafic of information in a scale never been seen before is a factor that helps many Witnesses to "awake" and see the lies and manipulation this will only increase in intensity as the years go by .The new GB lack any of the charisma of their predessesors ,it is not hard to see even for stupid Witnesses .The Condi court case and the storm of new pedophile scandals that will cost hundrends of millions in payouts and the slowing down of donations and the reaching out for priviledges of new ones .Put all this together and you have already a storm in the making .Yes it will take decades but it will happen

I really thought the child abuse scandal would do it, but sadly it looks like their just feeling persecuted instead of disgusted :(

Approx 75% left after 1925 , perhaps 15% after 1975 but the longer time goes on & the more "mature" the religion becomes , it gets more & more difficult for people to be shaken out. For most JWs , there is something of a "triple lock" - family , friends , inertia - that keeps them in.

Any scandal would certainly reduce recruitment , but that is pretty much negligible nowadays anyway ( in Europe at least. )

Look at all the bad press about Scientology yet there isn't a mass exodus. But it does make people think twice about signing up.

The only thing that would have a dramatic effect would be a schism - something similar to what happened after Russell died. Imagine if suddenly there were two Watchtowers getting printed , two Kingdom Ministries - maybe the GB split up into warring factions , both claiming to be Jehovah's representatives. One group went hardline - the other became more moderate. Some foreign branches supported one group - others supported the other. There was a land grab for the assets , fought out in the US courts. That would muddy the waters so much that inevitably many would leave.

When the Worldwide Church of God broke up , it splintered into dozens of smaller sects. It is well documented & probably ultimately the WTBTS will follow the same pattern , albeit probably not for a few decades... http://www.amazon.co.uk/The-Fragmentation-Sect-Schism-Worldwide/dp/019986151X

I've seen this happen in a smaller scale in the UK with Pentecostal & Bretheren churches. I met many in the ministry who used to be a member of one of the churches but who left when things got messy. Many get confused or just hacked off and call it a day.

Within the history of this religious organization there has been scandals after scandals, what makes you think anything would change now ?
