We'll see how the memory of the voter is in the 2014 congressional races. How many of these people in Congress sold or shorted stocks in the past few weeks (Paul Ryan and Cantor did in the last melt down).

Just try to imagine this situation: Romney is president and the democrats desided they will not pass a national budget or raise the dept ceiling unless their attached proposal for a gun ban is implemented.

Most of the Republicans I know are thrilled about this mess. They will rabidly dig their heels in and support whatever the GOP does. For as much as we should all understand the us vs. them mentality, I wonder why we are surprised about any of this.

The bill was passed in the senate 219–212. If this didn't reflect the will of the electorate, Democratic senators would have been decimated in the 2012 vote. Not only did they retain the number of seats, the also picked up an extra two.

I am glad to see an open debate. It will make us stronger in the end. That's the goal of free speech and our elected government which relies on checks and balances. Only from that struggle, can we get a better tomorrow as ideas and direction are hashed out.
But, what they really need to focus on is our National Debt, Social Security, medicare/medicaid, and our country sticking its nose into other country's business by yelling "military" all too often. Those are the elephants in the room. The rest is a side show.

You have a representative / electoral college democracy - you vote for a representative who then votes for you on specific laws. Unless you have a referendum where everyone gets to vote on a single issue then you can never say "the electorate didn't want ..."
The clearest indicator that he electorate *did* want is that they re-elected Obama.
But the republican party don't respect the electorate - they want to enforce their outdated minority views on others. This is why they are becoming less and less electable - they gave in to the quick-and-easy votes by selling their soul to the Tea Party, just as they did with the religious right before that.
