I have become a Nazirite: a razor has not come upon my head; I never run into dead bodies; I'm a teetotaler.

    My life remains a drag . . .

The point I was trying to make about Sampson and his re-growing hair is that the story doesn't make sense - would the people who captured him after incredible losses have allowed his hair to grow? No! Would they even have kept him alive? Heck no!! As soon as you caught someone who could do that you would kill them.

It's clearly a made-up story ... so where does that leave the literalists or all the other bible stories?

If people are adamant that Sampson was real but he clearly wasn't, why not Jesus? This is why they defend the indefensible at all costs because they know it reveals the shakey foundation that their beliefs are based on - a set of badly-written fair stories.

" allowed his hair to grow?"

Its common sense... long hair means strong short hair weak... we should hire one barber in all of our kingdom to shave the bastard everyday. Even the pubes

So that's why Whitesnake was so successful....

We all know the answer already:

Just like Samson's superhuman powers and strength stemmed from his uncut hair, a believer's superhuman power of being able to leap over logical inconsistencies found in Bible stories in a single bound (not to mention the ability to suppress cognitive dissonance that would paralyze any normal human) stems from the reader's possessing the superhuman power of faith!

Simon, Simon, why have you forsaken me?

I think the WT. believes all these accounts as truth, just as Jesus did.

Great discussion. I used to love these stories as a kid. They had a little of everything: action, romance, magic, adventures.

I think I also saw them as just stories as a child until the discussions at the meetings made it clear they felt it is literal.

It has only been this past year thanks to discussions like this and Terry's recent thread that I had allowed myself to even entertain the idea the bible stories are not literal.

Noah's ark was the first story to fall.

Now it is easier to have an open mind and look at the details critically.

Before I would dismiss anything that didnt make sense as miracles from God. Every thing is possible with god. If it isn't understandable its because Ididn't have enough faith.

There is a strong possibility today's Jehovah's Witnesses is pig ignorant, is there?

Do these people read, memorize, reflect, discuss, debate? I'm going to guess the answer is negative.

Without a core of basic, fundamental knowledge (which would include history, of course) there is not much

    to hang one's faith on.

    Oh wait!

    How stupid of me!

Today's modern JW has THE ORGANIZATION to believe in. The Org does all the reading, studying, analyzing and reflection

    FOR THE OTHERS.

So, the rank and file is just an empty vessel.

They KNOW nothing, like the character of LENNY in OF MICE AND MEN.

They just want to hear the same story over and over about how great it is going to be when they get to where they're going.
