Tricky. I had a conversation with a non-JW friend about this last month. We were observing an older couple who had a Downs Syndrome teenager. She was quite a handful, God bless her. Now, we discussed what we would do if we found out were we pregnant with a child like that or with similar disabilities etc....

I said and then I knew, in my heart, that I would not proceed with the pregnancy. Then I knew that my feelings (and others I have), made me a hypocite to be a JW.

I have had (in my teens) a termination and I do sometimes wonder...how old the child would be, what my life would be like if I stayed with my then boyfriend. I'm not sure if I feel regret. It was my choice and it was the right one at the time. I have a son now and I'm so glad I do, so it makes me think about what could have been.....

Jesus always taught us we should'nt judge others. No church should be allowed to take a woman's right to choose.

I will help. Abi believes in Karma, not hell.

And she's from India, not native English.

Pope Francis' statement ends nothing. He is the pope. the head of the Roman Catholic Church. Let me point out that the abortion rate would decline dramatically in the United States if Roman Catholic women followed the teachings of the Church. What most fail to realize is that Pope Francis has no jurisdiction over me or my body. He is not the head of the United States. Women have a right to choice in this country. The United States is a secular country. Our Constitution and laws forbid any entry of religion. Religion cannot be imposed on women.

Roe v. Wade settled that women have both a privacy right and fundamental liberty rights in this most private of all areas. Government cannot stop abortion. Indeed, most Americans favor the right to choose. You are free to believe abortion is a sin. The Taliban don't believe women should be educated. You have no right to impose your religious views on women or anyone else.

One way to decrease the rate of abortion is for people to be educated about birth control and assume personal responsibility. You have yet to address why anyone woman should be forced to carry the child of incest or rape.

I understand that you feel abortion is wrong. Well, most Americans disagree. In fact, the Supreme Court has long ruled now that we have a right to choose. It is a right for which I will fight in any manner and at any time. The American Taliban will not rule this country. Pope Francis should work on educating his flock and allowing safe, effective birth control. The present stance of the Church is sickening.

    Thanks WmF. Wow!!

Anyway, just to carry on here. I have BATTLED with my conscience for years regarding the IUD. I don't like taking the contraceptive pill and I don't want his Lordship to have a vasectomy. So, I have finally decided, after many years to have the IUD. This is contrary to what the WTS says, as conception "may" occur. A possibility but not norm.

What are others views on this subject??

At the end of the day, I was'nt going to let some guy in the GB dictate my contraception methods. Sorry if this offends anyone.

This is a very personal decision and one that each person should make individually. There is no blanket answer for everyone. It is easy for some people to just say, it's wrong, full stop and go about their business. But the reality is, it's a huge responsibility and those naysayers are not the ones that will be raising the child. I get really tired sometimes of people trying to push their views on all of us with threats of retribution and destruction. I have had to make this very choice once and it was the hardest thing I ever had to do. However, like Q, I know I did the right thing for me at that point in my life. It would have been very selfish of me to continue on, as I knew I didn't have the wherewithal or the resources or even the desire to bring another human into this world. What's that song by Everlast where the say, God forbid you have to walk a mile in her shoes, cuz then you'd really know what it's like to have to choose.....

Just to add to this discussion on abortion, there many prevailing circumstances why an abortion is a better accepted approach concerning

the mother and unborn fetus, medical or otherwise.

The pro-choice ideology is one that leaves open the choice on to the mother, be it one based on religious beliefs or not.

Also there is a reason why in countries that have established pro-choice laws governing over abortion that there is a

limited length of time of the gestation period for when a abortion can proceed, due to the gradual biological development of the fetus.
