I think some people want everything to be black and white, life begins at conception, abortion is murder, no shades of grey, I used to believe the same. After much contemplation, I am now pro choice because:

    1) Spontaneous abortions are more common than live births. If abortion is murder, then God is a mass murderer.

    2) To state that a few cells that could potentially become a human being is equivalent to an actual human being is ridiculous to me. Abortion is not murder.

    3) In places where abortion is illegal, many women die due to illegal abortions, in fact every seven minutes, a woman dies from an illegal abortion.

    4) For a woman, giving birth is a life altering decision with long term consequences. Forcing a woman to give birth when she is not prepared to do so is cruel and unnecessary.

    5) Those who believe that abortion is murder, are free to not get abortions. This is a religious belief, and I fully support their right to practice their religion when it comes to decisions about themselves.

    6) They do not have the right, at least in the US, to deny reproductive rights to those who do not believe abortion is murder. You can pout about that all you want, it doesn't change the facts.

    7) Extreme cases of negligent doctors who did late term abortions does not change the fact that abortion are very safe when done correctly.

    Band on the Run

Pope is only a symbol. What he said is ever-valid, and highlights an ETERNAL TRUTH which any human will welcome and subscribe to; because NO MAN or WOMAN will ever like to be USED as a means (to be stamped out of existence) to solve a minor problem (of someone’s convenience!)

Yet Band on the Run touched the right and eternal solution to abortion—A MILLION THANKS to you!

You said: “ abortion rate would decline dramatically in the United States if Roman Catholic women followed the teachings of the Church.”

You are absolutely right—people should act with knowledge, and preempt the situation that lead to abortion! It’s basic biological knowledge that certain people with certain blood group will have complications; also certain moods and habits (such as smoking, alcohol… can have very adverse impact on the fetus.) This type of knowledge, which is plenty today, should be made good use of.

I will give you one example of my class-mate. The first child born to him was very intelligent and smart with all enviable qualities. That time he was one of the top bureaucrats in the country. Then he resigned from his job and started (out of greed) his own business, had lots of money and friends who are drunkards. The child born to him in this period was a mentally retard. Then the couple decided to have no more children, yet his wife conceived—they went for an abortion. But they were being eaten up within because of the dreadful thought of having killed a baby. When his wife became pregnant again, they did not go for abortion this time. But the child that was born was disabled. Reason? Her own fleshly sister who is a gynecologist herself says “residue left by the abortion carelessly performed earlier caused this child to be born crippled.”

This real life incident has enough for us to learn many lessons! I leave to you to make your own conclusions! The wise will learn from the experience of others. The imprudent will learn lessons the hard way!

Now with regard to the root-cause of abortion (indiscreet, sexual indulgence), there are some lessons taught by the nature. There are some lower species such as butterflies, bees, spider … often they die instantly after impregnating their mates! There are some animals that behave strictly—though they cannot express themselves in the language understood by us, the homo sapiens, during the female animal periods (they will never allow the male to mate except during that period). If at all, which is very seldom, the male is so stupid as not to control itself, she would KICK, FLICK HIM AWAY, OR ATTACK HIM.

Rape and incestual sex can be thwarted to some extent if the victim uses their powerful weapon of screaming at the top of their voices. Have we not read in the newspaper of women who have even gone as far as cutting the penis of the rapists with knife?

If one starts her day by praying to God Almighty, the supreme beneficent (Mark 10:18), sending good vibrations to others, and having an altruistic mind-set deep within, chances of getting raped by others will be reduced to the minimum.

In brief, take the principle behind whatever given above: We should do whatever we can before-hand to avoid situation that lead to an abortion. That will definitely bring down the alarming number of abortions (over 50 million a year) drastically! Leave the rest (that which is beyond our control) to God, “the Father of all comforts.” (2 Corinthians 1:3)

    Abiather....

Most rapes occur when no one else is present. That's what attackers do -- wait until their victims are alone. Your reasoning sounds very much like the JW way of thinking. Yes, in an ideal world, there would be people around to thwart off the attacker, or the victim just might have a carving knife handy to hack away the privates of the attacker, but in all seriousness, this is not the way most rapes happen.

I don't feel as if people should use abortions as a means of birth control; however, if one IS responsible and ends up getting pregnant, the option should be there if she chooses. Many people wouldn't, and that's okay too. I don't think that fast food places should sell triple cheeseburgers loaded with cheese and bacon and mayo, but that's just my opinion. I won't eat one, but I certainly wouldn't stand in the way of anyone that would.

Horrible comparisons are always thrown about by "Pro abortion" people. Eating junk food to death of a child?? Really. God a murderer if the child is never born, but not a murderer once the person dies in an old age? If you use that logic God murders every single human that has ever lived, so your beef is with God not with miscarriage. All that approve of killing humans are selfish and fear pain and suffering just like society wants you to. Rape victims?? How about the child victim that actually never gets to see the world. What crime did the child commit to be sentenced to death by human choice? If any of you believe in God, you recognize that you will not live forever right now, and that God is in full control of the world, including allowing the effects of original sin. It is quite a difference when God allows bad things to happen and when we humans create evil ourselves. So like the OP mentioned, the aborted child has nothing to fear, but the mothers commiting this selfish crime will have to pay for their blood with their own soul if they do not repent.

God have mercy on us all.

This is the guy (God's mouthpiece on Earth) who's predecesors are responsible for the Crusades and the Inquisition?

Yeah, that respect for life really stands out.

jws, it is very sad to hear such ignorance. Please read up on history first of all.

Secondly, would you like to be judged based on your father, grandfather, great grandfather? Not everone in your family was a saint I am sure. Unlike JW the Catholic Church does not call itself God's mouthpiece, but rather the priesthood of the apostles has been passed down, including the primacy of St. Peter the prince of the apostles. Pope Francis is nothing other than the chief servant in making important decisions of how Christians should live in the society of our time. The dogmas of the Church have not changed in the Church's 2000 year long history. There definitely were things that the Church is not proud of, and have actually admitted fault and have repented, but the two topics you mentioned had at least some merit in trying to keep the Church pure and free. Pope Francis has never killed anyone, but a lot of the people on this website have, so I wouldn't go around insulting a man about his respect for life with bloody hands.
