QB, I'd love to see them try. It may be enough of a nudge to get some to say, "I'm outa here!"

AlphaMan - "The JW's need a new Armaggedon date. What's a doomsday cult without a doomsday date?"

You're right; End-Time religions absolutely need to date-set in order to drum up enthusiasm amongst the membership.

Problem with the WTS is they can't really do it anymore; they've done it way too often over the past century. The option's long past its sell-by date.

They'd lose too much internal credibility.

I actually liked the concept of the book study meeting. What I didn't like was to have a third day busy with a meeting. But I feel that the gathering at someone's house to study the Bible was the closest thing to an original (read: first century) Christian gathering that we ever had. There was a much more relaxed athmosphere, much less pre-scripted meeting, and the brothers and sisters got to know each other much better. If anything, I would gladly trade the Theocratic School + Service meetings for a return to the Book Study meeting in private homes. It would be much more beneficial to the congregation and much more...well, Christian-like. With perhaps the exception of the weekly Bible reading highlights, the TS+S meetings are utterly boring and frankly, useless.

This religion needs to become more "mainstream" to keep its adherents. Times have changed, its not the late 1800's-early 1900's anymore. Nobody really cares about religion anymore particularly here in the U.S. I still go out in the ministry (I know, I know how can I..) and based on most reactions that I get from people they could care less about doctrines or for example Christmas being unscriptural (everyone knows that already), or Jesus is god or isn't he (besides pentacostals). Religion is a joke now, its 2014 people care about so many other things nowdays. They need to cut down the 1 weekday meeting that they have now or eliminate it and make Sundays 2-2.5 hrs and incorporate some of the TMS and Service meeting. People would be much, much happier. If they do this I think people might be ok so they are a little weird but mostly like us.

now that its gone i can't imagine having to dodge 3 meetings per week instead of just 2

for the last year the BS was around I missed almost the entire year of studies. When it went away my average meeting attendance came way up and I didnt have to change a thing
