Good question, and I might phrase it differently. What is the motivation? Find the motivation and you find the source.
What the point if it all? Money, power, sex, drugs, what is their motivation? Or are they totally disillusioned? Just another notch in the belt of the ruler of this world?
If anyone had the true answer, that "key" would open up Pandora's box.

One theory I have heard is that of the bloodless medicine. It is a huge industry, with a cell saver machine that has a patent. Who holds that patent? The JW were the willing subjects to test it out and some died as a result. ( drowning from too much volume expander for example) The SABM has WTBTS members in the upper ranks.
The cell saver machine was also interestingly developed about the same time the society declared transfusions a sin from what I have read. I know of a person who is studying this in great depth. The patent holder is a mystery at this point.
Extremely interesting replies. For those of you that believe they don't make that kind of money please take into account that the donations stack up to 300 million plus a year, and they financial investments even in small countries go into the tens of millions. In the late 90's they had between 250-300 million in investments just in the US. Now, those investment money should be in the billions. They also have a strong presence in powerful economies such as Germany, Japan and UK. It's also impossible not to notice the trend of selling real estate right and then moving to cheaper areas and repeating the cycle (at least that's what they do in my country). Of course, they financial power is almost nothing compared to mainstream religions with billions of members, such as Catholicism. Nevertheless, they financial power should not be underestimated.
Apognophos - I understand that but I'm also sure that someone is in charge. In order to keep such a large corporation existing and profitable, you have to make extensive leadership plans in advance.
Some of you had very interesting ideas regarding the legal, printing and finance departments. I think that's an alley worth exploring in order to learn more about how the borg really works.
Zeb - Bitcoins are a crypto currency that can only be used in the online mediums. It offers a good degree of anonymity which made it popular with a lot of people, including drug dealers, assassins and so on. It's extremely volatile compared to traditional currencies. There's no one really in control of it. Even you could manufacture one if you'd have enough computing power, which was easier in the beggining but not it has become extremely hard and unproffitable. It's creator, Satoshi Nakamoto, designed it in such a way so that there will be a limited number of bitcoins. Transactions are relatively anonymous. Bitcoins can be exchanged for goods and services and even cash in some places. I see it as the currency of the future, a future in which no government will be in control of it.

NonJwSpouse - Well, your theory does sound a little like a big conspiracy, but when you think about it, it's exactly what this organization really is. It would seem plausible that bloodless medicine to be part of their end game. If it would be achieved, they would get their hands on tens of billions and then could brag to the borg sheep of how Jehovah helped this discovery.

The GB are not just front man, they're still the keepers and creators of doctrines.
And their new doctrines does not show any sign of direction or planning, they are just reacting.
We would see a better clear direction (we cannot answer for sure if they are going mainstream or underground) if was someone behind the curtains.
The only clear direction is the simplification (dumbing down) process, but it's not something planned.
The legal dep. seems to play a role of limiting the more absurd things, like blood factions and donations were invented purely by legal reacting.
Simply put the WT is a Ouroboros system, of course there are some people with more power in hands, but still is relative power.
It's the same thing to ask who controls the world. The right answer is nobody and everybody at the same time.
Going to fantasy land, is the same case of Jehovah's Rules being bigger than Jehovah itself because once been stablished he just can't go back. LOL

COOKIMASTER- Your theories are very accurate from what I've been told and from what I've researched. I chatted in detail with a GB members DFed relative one time and most of what posters are expressing to you on this thread are true. THe GBARE front men for much more powerful entities in the WT organization. The WT Society is a money making corporation USING Jehovah's Witnesses as a religious front for a marketing tool to make huge profits.
One evidence of this is the latest scam being put forth by the WT Society instructing Circuit Overseers to travel to many different congregations telling elders they need to " remodel " their kingdom halls in which the WT Society loans money to accomplish - then they get local congregations to pass motions to be indebted to the WT Society for the loan from local JW contributions- then in the end guess whose name is on the title of ownership for all kingdom halls > Yep. The WT Bible and Tract Society.
And if we don't think that the WT Society is playing financial hardball with this " ponzi " scheme- just research what happened to the elders in Menlo Park , California who tried to NOT cooperate with getting their kingdom hall re-modeled at the C.O.'s suggestion , because these elders didn't want to put the " brothers " & " sisters " in debt for years to the WT Society - these elders got deleted, then disfellowshipped for trying to sue the WT Society. And then the WT Society had some criminal thugs run an elders adult son off the road in a car wreck trying to kill him to send a message.
Listen people, and listen good- we are dealing with a criminal organization in reality here that masquerades as " respectable " in public all the while VERY subversive tactics and laws are being broken behind the scenes. But just like ANY powerful business, corporation, or government- it's going to take a hell of a lot to take the WT Society totally down- if ever. Think about it- how else could an organization last 135 years now since 1879 without using dishonesty or illegal means to survive and accomplish it's financial goals ? If it were an honest organization - it would have been put out of business years ago. My 2 cents
