PA: I don't like the Jonestown refferences. I think it kills the discussion.

    Apparently it doesn't.

I appreciate you don't like it. I don't particularly like it either. But it is appropriate to draw attention to where this kind of thing could lead.

No worries. I don't think you guys have to agree with me. I just think its hard to get JW's to listen when this refference comes up. I realize there aren't any here so no big deal.

To Jonestown or not to Jonestown is not really the question. Its just a moment in history that shows the extreme of letting someone else thing for you. In that way, I understand what its a refference for. But overall, I don't think its very applicable. One could make the case for the blood doctrine and the lives that has cost even though its difficult to quantify, and I am sympathic to that view specifically because its the doctrine that woke me up. Still, I don't think you would get many if any JW's to obey that far of an extreme.

Of course......I've been wrong before. They shun their own children, parents, and loved ones if told to. So who really knows. Hopefully we never find out.

PA, I've known people that have refused a transfusion and died. My goodness, the WTBTS itself has published accounts of children "martyrs" that have "heroically" died for their "faith."

One of my best friend's wife refused one and died. She may or may not have survived (she had a form of leukemia), but she didn't even have a choice.

A few years later the WTBTS changed its stance on blood fractions. Now they were allowing treatments which she was denied. Needless to say, my friend was livid. He has since left the cult.

I sent a quote of this paragraph to both my parents, just after Cedar posted an article about it on jwsurvey.

My father has not responded to a single email in over a year.

My mom's response? "Don't worry, we won't drink the Kool-Aid..."

My reply: "What will you do? Maybe you should discuss with Dad, what your limits are in this situation. It sounds like a threat to me."

    (no reply)

The first thing I though of when I first saw this in the WT was Jonestown also. No more Kool-Ade for me that crap will kill you! I'm now a Royal Crown drinker! At least when my liver fails I can have a liver TRANSPLANT.

"Do whatever the GB says??? That sounds a lot like Jonestown" to an active JW can make them think things . . .

What % of JWs remember Jonestown 35 years ago?
