Why Is Alcoholism Deeply Embeded In JW Culture?

One imagines Cognitive Dissonance must be high on the list.

Plus being "filled with misinformation and lugging around a suitcase of guilt".

Being a "spiritual prostitute" and "spiritually drunk" from drinking the "wine" of legalistic, moralistic and sectarian religion can't help either (Rev 14:8).

It seems a heavy detox program is needed when exiting this messed up group of "whitewashed graves", "gnat strainers" and "camel gulpers".

We don't Excommunicate many for being public drunkards, "Drunkards of Ephraim" are warmly welcomed in our Kingdom Hall and my CBOE could outdrink any of those teetoolooers from Ephraim. I think as one poster said, "Drink is the anti-venom for Cognitive Dissoance".

What about the amount of Witnesses who are still attending Meeting who are suffering from horrible anxiety and depression and guilt because they feel they dont measure up, or can they keep up on the Theocratic Treadmill? We have members who quit because they can feel the hostile feelings of families who hate each other, and Elder Wars, "Elderette Wars" "Gossip Bombing" (No Hug Attacks here, just Hatred Attacks) using the platform to attack other Elders and their kids is a hot button here!

When I go to the meetings two families ignore me, because I do not measure up to their standards in the truth! Its a small congregation, and everytime I go I feel anxious and sick. They are mean and nasty. I had a drink last night beause I feel the stress and could not sleep, and feel lucky that I have the excuse now not to have to go, woke up this morning with a cold!

Their attitude is rubbing off on others. Its so weird to walk in to a building and have people stare at you with such angry looking faces. What have I done? Miss a few meetings on/off for a year. And not go out on field service as much as they want, to be honest I do not go out but put a small report i

A drink now and then helps. ps I buy my own!

Alcohol is extremely popular among the witnesses. Maybe it's because they are not allowed to do drugs..

I live in a country in which alcohol is a big part of culture and I find the jws tend to be less inclined to over indulge than the general population. Depends on where you live I suppose. Jws seem to put less emphasis on booze than other people around here that's for sure.

Also depends on the company. My JW guests are always all too happy to indulge in my scotch collection... Partly because most couldn't afford it and partly because they know I won't be offended by their glassy-eyed rosy cheeked shenanigans.

My Mum is a functioning alcoholic. She missed a lot of meetings last year due to illness, she was a nicer person then. She seems to turn in to a hellfire preacher when she's active!!!

She's missed quite a few lately due to a house move and the dreaded winter bugs. I can have a "normal" conversation with her when she's away from the KH.

She drinks because she feels inadequate, I think.

I was introduced to hard core drinking at 15 by my Presiding Overseer and Assistant Overseer. Drinking was a big part of the social side of life as a JW- parties, BBQs, camping trips, you name it. In my 40s I was having blackouts almost everynight. I saw many friends die of alcohol poisioning including the two Overseers. I made a promise to myself in 1999 I would live the new century free of this religion and this addiction that had consumed me for 37 years.

    So far so good.

Some people are addicted to alcohol..some can drink in moderation. So to answer your question the J.W enviroment doesnt have a support network...how can a witness say " i am an alcoholic" ?

Jen, Ray Franz made the comment in ISOCF that it's the people who are trying to be kind and loving, show deep love for their spiritual side who are attacked by dibilitating anxiety and a nervous stomach caused by people with a "wrong spirit" and a "non stop treadmill that leaders to disappointment, I don't understand how guys and gals keep going when their "Lizard brain" is screaming "Flee, bad for your health this is!" There is nothing wrong with good beverages, JWs need to Face the Facts, many of them are drinking heavily to cover over some personality trait that's destroying their mental health. You have a right to have a drink or three to calm your nerves, I have been to Wine Parties where a case is brought out for six people to pound and than we bring out the Port and other drinks until we are so messed up, one Pioneer is so drunk, she was giving oral-sex to some young man while her husband was passed out with his drinking Elders. He told me in private "what went down", I kept that secret and told him to repent because the Elders would have crushed his spirit if they found out his wife took advantage of a stupid young man who said "I don't think drinking is a good idea", "Don't be a chicken, Jesus turned water in to wine" false logic, so please do enjoy your drink if it helps you battle the insanity of this all!

The Pioneer sister approached the young man and want's to keep seeing him even though her husband is loaded with cash. Brother "Young-hung-low" likes Cougars, who am I to get in the way of true Lust?

Julia we live in one of the biggest wine growing regions in the World, I see Australia is holding their own by producing lots of wine with a "twist-off" metal cap, how come the Aussies are not big on using oak-wood corks? Maybe the Aussies who become JWs are trying to show how strong they are by being counter-culture? Can you tell me Julia why they use metal-twist off caps on $15-$30 bottle of Aussie Wines, I don't get it!
