What is it with teens/adults and dependency on everyone else?

I've seen a lot of this lately here in the UK, where teens and young adults still depend on their parents when they live away from home.

Some just don't seem able to earn enough. Some are on benefits. Some are just doing nothing. Some earn more than me and are in debt. Some want to return back to their parents home.

I am not saying that all teens/young adults are thus. However, is it just me or is this on the rise?

What's the problem? Is it the government? Education? Soap operas? The media? Peer and social pressure? All in my imagination?

    WHAT?

I won't say all young adults are like this. My granddaughter for instance, is perfect.

jgnat - Could be 'helicopter parents' of course.

    Intersting thought Punk...hmmm security maybe.

80% of wealth in U.K is inherited and some kids are so spoilt they dont have love or need from mum and dad. SAD. But many kids leave home i think they think they are all grown up but still need that love of dependency and the parents need to give love...so they do the kids washing and if the kid gets drunk and misses sunday dinner, but sends flowers in remorse ...its love. It doesnt have to be a bad thing...

from my family observation, the latest crop of youngsters are not into constructive hobbies, but in front of keyboards, screens, not very work orientated future developments.

you mention living with parents. to buy a house in our neck of the woods they will hand over a million dollars by the tima all is done and they own it. Renting will only rise the ultemate price. Real wages have shrunk in many sectors. There are only so many cushy public sector positions around.

under every helicopter is a cushy landing PAD.

prologue....being in front of a computer screen may be not be very work orintated for future development...but whats wrong with a simple and uncomplicated job. Maybe the ideas of 2.5 kids and a house in the country is a bogus superficial idea of success.

If only our kids could find something to love and dedicate there lifes to outside the perceived perception of being a worthwhile humun being...oh yes i forgot HELLO watchtower.

I think many young persons expect to walk right out of their parents home into equal circumstances, but to do so they must go deeply into debt. Perhaps they fail to realize that their parents didn't start out at their age with the 2-story, 4-bedroom home and 2 new cars. We started out in a tiny rental apartment with one "decent" car and another clunker just scaping by the first few years. (It could have been a lot easier if we'd have pursured education, but you know THAT story.)

I think our kids actually have it easier as they stayed home longer, pursued an education (rebellious, defiant JW family), and we helped them with their start in life. Now it's their job to build from there.
