Baby Battles For Life As Parents Reject Blood Transfusion

    BYLINE: Panafrican News Agency

    BODY:

Lusaka, Zambia (PANA) - A six-month-old baby is battling for her life at the Lusaka University Teaching Hospital (UTH) after
her parents who belong to the Jehovah's Witnesses sect rejected a blood transfusion to save her life on religious grounds.

The baby's parents, Mr. and Mrs. Cleophas Mulumba who travelled from the Democratic Republic of Congo for the operation in
the country have refused to have the blood transfusion carried out.

They said that they had deep-rooted belief in Christianity which was explicit about the handling of blood. According to the
state-run 'Times of Zambia' newspaper, Beatrice Kashimba, who underwent surgery last Monday for a condition called Biliary
Atresia lost vital pints of blood and body fluids after the operation when she developed diarrhoea and vomiting.

UTH medical personnel said the condition of Beatrice, who was looking pale and weak, was grave and unless a blood
transfusion was carried out, her chances of survival were very slim.

The parents, however, quoted a section of the Holy Bible, which states that: "The Holy Spirit and we have agreed not to put any
other burden on you besides those necessary rules. "Eat no food that has been offered to idols, eat no blood, eat no animals that
have been strangled and keep yourselves from sexual immorality. You will do well if you take care not to do these things with our
    best wishes."

UTH public relations officer, Pauline Mbangweta, expressed the hope that the parents would soon realise the gravity of the
condition of the child and allow the transfusion.

"The doctors were doing everything possible and had put the child on blood supplements. I hope the parents would have a change
of heart and allow ... blood transfusion," Mbangweta said.

Meanwhile, Clement Samabona, spokesman of the Jehovah Witnesses' Watch Tower Society in Zambia said the refusal by the
parents to consent to blood transfusion was their personal belief and not that of the Church.

"There is no policy in the Church which bars anyone from blood transfusion, it is all a personal choice that anyone is entitled to,"
    Samabona said.

But Jason Sakala, another Watch Tower member, supported the parents' decision. He quoted Genesis 9 verses 4-16 to support
his views that the eating of blood is forbidden and anyone who disobeys this is disobeying God's law.

"I am in support of the parents because they are using God's words as their guidance. If they decide to do otherwise then they will
be disrespectful to God's law," Sakala told PANA.

He added, "putting one's life ahead of God's law is fatal, as Mark 8: 35 and 36 tells us."

Sakala said there were other ways the hospital could supplement the needed blood other than transfusion.

Meanwhile, Beatice's parents are enraged with the Times of Zambia for carrying a front page picture Thursday of their baby lying
in agony at UTH, with a swollen stomach.

    Dearest funky:

Have you never heard of the fall? God wanted all of his children to enjoy everlasting life in the beginning. However they pulled away from him and rejected the perfect start that he provided them with, dear. See Genesis 2 and 3. It is really quite elementary, sir.

To all those who think waiting on the LORD is wrong. See what God says:

"It is good that one should both wait, and that in silence, for the salvation of Jehovah. It is good for a man that he bear the yoke in his youth: He sitteth solitary and keepeth silence, because he hath laid it upon him; he putteth his mouth in the dust, if so be there may be hope; he giveth his cheek to him that smiteth him; he is filled full with reproach. For the Lord will not cast off for ever; but if he have caused grief, he will have compassion according to the multitude of his loving-kindnesses: for he doth not willingly afflict or grieve the children of men."

No he didn't. He didn't want humans to have knowledge of good and evil, and he certainly didn't want them to live forever.

Genesis 3:22 And the Lord God said, "Now that the man has become like one of us, knowing good and evil, he must not be allowed to stretch out his hand and take also from the tree of life and eat, and live forever."

Hilde, I thought you already were dead.......but not so and still giving unwanted advice.

    Hildegard of Bingen (1098 - 1178)
German abbess, visionary, scholar and saint.

Entering a Benedictine convent at the age of 7, Hildegard took vows at 14, although her visions and revelations did not begin until she was 32. In 1136 she became Abbess of Diessem, and later moved her expanding community to Bingen. She also founded several other convents.

Hildegard described and illustrated her visions in Scivias (i.e. sciens vias Domini: 'the one who knows the ways of the Lord'); she wrote hymns, poetry and a morality play and was an accomplished artist and musician: her beautiful and original hymns are thought to be the earliest surviving Mass music composed by a woman. Known as 'the Sibyl of the Rhine', her learning extended to science and medicine. Her natural history writings include remarkably advanced and precise studies of plants, minerals, elements and animals, and the medical topics range from circulation of the blood to mental instability. Her scientific works, some of which may have been prepared by groups working under her direction, include the Liber subtilitatem, and De simplicines medicae. Her last work was the Liber divinorum operum.

A persuasive speaker and writer, Hildegard gave advice (often unsought) to contemporary rulers, including Henry III, Frederick Barbarossa and Pope Eugenius III, and in conjunction with Bernard of Clairvaux mobilized public support for the Second Crusade.

I am confused this is a discussion board. Hilda asked a valid question. Why all the troll talk and trying to hyjack the thread?

Is there anything worth dying for? The only thing I can think of at the present time is my daughter. I would die for her. So I suppose love is sometimes worth dying for. Conversely it is also worth living for. I have considered ending my life before when things got to be to much, but the love I have for my daughter kept me from doing it. Powerful emotion love.....sad how the JW's have perverted it, isn't it?

    Hiya Xena!!! Have missed you!!

I believe the hijacking is going on for 2 reasons, HildaBingen did not come to this board until the tenth of this month, which happened to be the same day The Press released all the stories about silentlambs. And on her first day here she implyed Bill Bowen and company liars as well attacking his credibility as some of the silentlambs.

Her efforts in her first threads seemed to rally around the WTBTS and her ever clear message that there has been NO cover up whatsoever, and the WTBTS the way I read her comments has nothing to atone for.
