I am from the detroit area. Jgnat is right, the core is fine and pretty safe. Ford field is nice. Greek town is great, good food and a casino is there in Greek town too. Park at the motor city casino for free and take the people mover to the river walk. My sister and I walked from Ford Field after a concert at 12 am to parking far away and lived to tell about it.....lol Out a little bit in Mexican village it is a little iffy but we love the food so much. I have been to Mexican village at least 50 times and never had a problem, but I would not walk the streets there.

Eastern market is another place I feel save. My sister and I both have worked there. Never a problem. I call it the arts and croissant crowd. lol

You just have to know where to go and where NOT to go.

Where the convention is at Ford field ( I think ) is very safe. I wonder if any of the hotel casinos are on the list ? I would stay at the Motor City........... If you have to go to a convention make it Detroit, you may slip away and have some FUN !

Detroit had the worse of the Economic Meltdown, the jobs never returned pre-2008 Bail-out Nation, why does the Organization place this heavy burden on their Witnesses? The Friends in Detriot can't afford $500 for a worthless Weekend of the same shit they were taught since 1975, when will they stop torturing the Witnesses with useless conventions, I feel bad for many brothers and sisters who would rather spend their hard-savings on something for themselves instead of wasting it on a Watchtower Bragging Rights Numbers Game!

I wouldn't go to the Grand Boasting Session if it was in the middle of downtown Dunedin, New Zealand. If the program is not worth attending, it is not worth it whether it is safe or not. I am not going, plain and simple, and if I am not going, unless I plan to take a trip to that city near that week, I am not wasting the money booking a room. And if I am planning a trip, I am not going to the bedbug motels the washtowel suggests.

I find it's best to live in an area that hosts 2 or 3 District Conventions.

Then you can always say you attended (or are planning to attend) "the other one".

Then you can say: "Wasn't it the greatest DC ever!!!" because the ones you skip are indeed, the best ever.

Last year I flew into detroit last feb and it was downright eerie. My mother and I were the ONLY people in that amazing, VERY long airport light show/moving walkway. We stayed in a burb, and a cousin in construction told me all houses that were purchased by investors, and then officially inspected and then found mold or bedbugs, were required to be burned down immediatly. He said the amount of houses torn town/burned down is huge.

Just looking out the window at the abandonded homes in the city was astounding.

I wil lbe curious to see if the city can really rebuild to at least a portion of it's former glamor. Investors are definitly buying up prime property locations... but the city has to be able to sustain the infrastructure. Going bankrupt is actually a step in the right direction in regards to recovery, but it remains to be seen if it will recover.

The JWs probably recieved a grant from the city to offset the cost of the convention center. The WTBTS can easily pay the reduced rent out of pocket, but the plan is to have the R&F pay for it and all the extra will go directly to the WTBTS coffers. They WT promises the city that dubs will fill the hotels and eat at all the establishments [ Just not during noon-break, LOL!!!] thereby boosting the local economy. The city make some revenue, the GB make a s***load, and the R&F don't know the difference.

If the GB really wanted to let the city make some cash, they would stop forbidding the JWs from going out for lunch. They will NEVER do that, because that is the main reason most dubs put up with the mind numbing BS. They want to associate. Plus the GB wants the "lunch money" to go into the contribution boxes.

    Theoretical example:

    1) WTBTS has $100,000.000 on hand that they COULD use, but they won't unless it's absolutely neccessary.

    2) Detroit convention center costs $10,000

    3) The city pays for half, [ I have no idea what they really pay] leaving a $5,000 dollar tab.

    4) The R&F donations generate $20,000 over 3 days because everyday the WTBTS says that DC expenses were $10,000 [ not $5,000] and there is a need. The R&F also pays for hotel rooms and eating out. Sometimes millions are generated for a host city.

None of the R&F ever know that their donations from the past are where the $100,000,000 came from. They think the WTBTS is always on the verge of poverty, yet somehow Jehovah provides. The WTBTS uses the R&F donations to add to the R&F donations of the past. "NEVER use your own money!", says the WTBTS!! It's a sweet gig!!

Well, they could always take in a Tigers game. That's something nice about Detroit. It'll be summer, right? Let's see... The convention is July 25-27. Oh, the Tigers are in California playing the Angels then.

So that must be it! People aren't going to the convention because the Tigers are out of town. Well, well... they must be going to another site where the baseball team is in town...

    Crazyguy: 'Hopefully this happens everywhere.'

Its' happening in Southern California. Chaos, confusion and disorder among JW leadership!

Dozens upon dozens of congregations in Southern California were read a stern letter from the 'Watchtower Convention Authority' twice in one week that too many JW families are disregarding WT's directive to attend San Diego's Qualcomm Stadium for this year's district convention.

Too many JWs, it seems, are opting to go to smaller venue District Conventions closer to their homes such as the Long Beach Convention Center. As a result the Long Beach hotels are being booked by JWs who should be attending the much larger San Diego's Qualcomm Stadium. The effect is that there are no more hotels for families assigned to the Long Beach Convention Center.

WT is also getting flack from various San Diego hotel managements because the large blocks of rooms that were set aside for the DC attendees are not being booked....And so WT top-brass are pissed!

What Emptyinside is true. It's the reason for the hotel lists, not to benefit the friends with cheaper rooms, but rather to get free rooms for the Bethelites. My ex Bethelite friends would get free rooms at their District Conventions as long as Witnesses rented the agreed %age or # of rooms. They also got the best rooms available. I know this for a fact. Money kickbacks could be part of it too but I don't know that for sure.

My nephew lives in Grosse Pointe Farms and is on the road each day traveling for his job. A few weeks ago he said he no longer will stop in Detroit for gas or anything other than calling on a client. He has lived in the area for over 30 years, so he is not new to the area and has seen it decline, and has a real concern for safety.
