I would probably steer clear of Detroit also. The city gets way too much bad press.

I wonder if this happens in other cities and other countries. In Australia, Melbourne is the place to go for shopping, culture and many sports, so many australian jws are excited about the dc in Melbourne. Many won't be though because Australians have to travel literally from every remote area and from the other side of this huge country. Many Australians are five hours away from an airport. Many Australians are also losing jobs at an unprecedented rate, leaving families dependent on welfare which in no way could fund a family trip to Melbourne. It's a huge ask for families and old people people with disabilities and pensioners and that. Half of Australia seems to have relatives in or near Melbourne, but what about the others? An assembly in peak tourism season means big $$ paid in accommodation.

Last time we had the ic in Sydney a lot went to a smaller one in cairns because all the hotels are a walk to the convention center and the rail company provides free passage to pensioners from Brisbane. A lot of older people and single mums went because it's a smaller city, free to get to and easier to get around.

The international conventions are a huge money maker but many jws simply can't afford to go. I'm sure Detroit will attract fewer than a glamorous city like los Angeles or Melbourne, but I bet the gb got it cheap!!

I think many are looking online for good hotel rates (e.g. Booking.com) and see that they can get better and closer hotels for a better rate than the WTBTS offers. In this case, Detroit being one of the most violent dangereous cities will not attract either.

If the DCs no longer create the expected Cash, they too will soon be history.

yes, we would LOVE it if the DC was in Chicago. now we would be talking.

if and when we go to detroit, we will make the best of it. fine dining, maybe a latenight stop at a casino, possibly a good concert.

i am almost begging someone to talk to me about my petty gambling, in my circles it is kinda understood that we all will hit a casino if we can or on a cruise. .

I live in Michigan, but not Detroit. I recently heard that Detroit was trying to get Obama to reserve a whole slew of Visas, exclusively for Detroit. I think the idea was to get some business owners to come into town. (I'm not sure if Obama is the one who is supposed to do that, but he will do as he darn-well pleases, thank you very much!)

The city also seems to have a growing Muslim population, at least in one area of the city.

My parents are planning to attend. They have booked a hotel in Novi, which is about 30 minutes away. I'm sure it's not on the list.

Yes, you must book a room the WTS has set aside or they will lose THEIR discount. It's not the money............

My mother claimed that they had to call 10 hotels, before they could find rooms for the Detroit convention. She claimed they are expecting 45,000 people to attend.

She was also curious to tell me about the letter they read at their meeting on Thursday night. "We don't want to make the Witnesses look bad! I don't understand why they are having this problem."
