    Met,

A agree with your most recent assessment. The changes that will likely be brought about by both external and internal pressures should, I state should, bring about a better co-existence for all concerned and ratchet down the hyperbole and animosity a bit. Let it come. Political change because of such pressures is a Western phenomemon and typicallly only capable in democracies. The Jewish people are exercising that democracy, and it appears to be a good thing.

Do you see an open clash coming between the Liberal/Progressive Jews and the Ultra Orthodox.

I think you're already seeing an open clash and that's what's new and significant about the situation. I read one claim that the protest was closer to 600, 000 and some of Israeli media clearly didn't want to cover it.

Non-compliance by hundreds of thousands can be very powerful, even if they aren't in the majority. 'We won't and you can't make us' was used to great success by.......... Judge Rutherford !

The weird thing is that some of these Ultra-Orthodox oddly favor the Palestinians in certain ways. A leading Rabbi told his followers that the Arabs are obeying God by having lots of children ( "The Laws Of Noah").

RE: Israel. As I mentioned, there are lots of powerful forces for and against this nation. I wouldn't put too much emphasis on the ultra-orthodox protests, or the protests by the RIF living there. But neither would I dismiss its potential power. Remember, though, all it would take is one effective attack from an external nation/state and all bets are off. Jews will be Jews and stick together more than mud and blood, as they should. Their economic and military prowess has enabled them to focus on such things as democratic rights, fairness, treatment of the Palestinians, etc. The entire area is rife with problems; the nation of Israel - like it or not - has created somewhat of an economic/miliitary/resource miracle.

You need to be shameless to speak about a palestinian problem. They seemed to be doing quite well before they were invaded and massacred by the jews when they decided they wanted to grab that piece of land. If the orthodox don't agree with the state of Israel what are they doing living there? Jews are doing really well in most countries of the world, the only ones being prosecuted nowadays are those who dare to speak up for the palestinians.

The gypsies also have a right to exist, how about gathering them all together at your place? Would you have a problem with that?

The creation of Israel wouldn't have been possible without the UK, the only european empire that despite being the most absolutist (the Queen is also the Pope) and medieval in its social structure, managed to avoid all the revolutions that destroyed its rivals last century. Talk about mysteries.

There is no freedom if you are not able to call a spade a spade, and the creation of the State of Israel is a Genocide.

    AT,

I don't disagree with you. But it is what it is. The current nation of Israel was created out of WWII. I choose not to concern myself with the world as I wish it was but to deal with the reality of what we have. Had the nation of Israel not come into existence, these 'problems' would not exist as they currently do. I can't argue with that. The internal pressure is likely to have more success changing the Israelis' treatment of the Palestinians that external pressure. I'm glad to see it occurring.
