Lisa Rose , no I do not need to believe in God to have self esteem , I was just answering the point of veiw that being part of a "religion " takes away self esteem .

WT Wizard haven't "religious " people done lots of good things because of their convictions that all men are created equal by God , in His image . They were a huge part of ending legal slavery and now many individuals work hard to stop illegal slavery . How about Christian projects to bring clean water to people and closer to home Christian groups helping with debt crisis , just to name a few of the many worthwhile ,not polluted things that Christians do to make the world a better place .

Non-religious spirituality could be simply defined as deliberately cultivating non-material things in one's life, such as, love, joy, peace, kindness, long-suffering, goodness, mildness. In this sense an atheist can be 'spiritual'.

Jhine, yes, Christianity has done some beneficial things, no question. But there is a lot of bad along with the good that has to be acknowledged. I am not as anti religion as Cofty is. I think some people need the structure and support that religion sometimes provides. It very much depends on the church, some are better than others. Last year I even attended a church for a few months. It was on the more liberal end of things, they had no doctrine, it was more about charitable works and mutual support. In the end it wasn't what I needed right now, but I enjoyed my time there.

Yada Yada, yes, the fruitage of the spirit, one of the few things I kept from my JW years, I still try to express that in my life. I think they should have just stuck with that and not tried to burden everyone with all the Pharisee like laws. But for me, spirituality is more than that. I just feel that sometimes there is something more than the immediate and the physical. I don't believe in an active involved creator, too much evidence against that, but at times I feel there is something more out there than what we see, hear and feel.

The word "spiritual" is too tainted with woo and superstition.

exWTslave, like it. Although part of your definition falls in the ''Emotional/To Love" category.

cofty, I agree that there can be a certain woo and superstition applied to the word "spiritual". To me this is a choice. I do not apply these attributes to the word myself. Not everyone believes in a higher power nor "woo" and "superstition". I feel that spirituality is personal to each and every person. Some of us may have the same or similar definitions; others will differ.

When asked what the definition of spirituality is, my response is that which cannot be quantitated by Science as yet, but is a personal one that relays the human need to be of value, to be connected, and to be contributory. There is no need for God, a higher power, "woo" or "supersition" to have these things.

I often feel deeply moved and over-awed by things science does understand. I still eschew the word "spirituality" though.

Being over awed and moved by science is not what I would consider to be spirituality either.

I find it very difficult to respond to this thread. It's like an admonition that people should never wear perfume.

Obviously many people do find comfort in their religion, and it is also providing community, framework, and stability in to their lives.

Cofty, I wonder if animals are superstitious.
