It only proves the hold this cult has over its members. They are confident they will lose very few supporters regardless of the changes in their doctrine.....haven't they been all conditioned to believe even what may seem to make no sense to the rest of the world?

It's too difficult to drop 1914 at this point. Too many years invested in that date with defending 607, and a lot of important doctrines and authority rely on it. Since it's 100 years, they are forced to recognize it. I think there are many JWs that are doubting or disappointed as you said. Of course, with faith in the faithful and discreet slave, aka the Governing Body, JWs will just follow whatever new information they're told. That's why there was a watchtower study not too long ago about being patient and keep waiting, in the meantime, follow the organization no matter what.

Either they avoid the whole issue, and let doubts fester only to erupt at some time in the near future. . . . .

I think they knew what their choices were and are gambling on #2 as the way to go.
If I were in the same position as they (i.e. a cold, calculating psychopath) I think I would've chosen the same.
