Likely this is part of their cost-cutting measures. As has been noted, the forced retirement of the over-70's will open up several CO slots.

If they get younger DOs to replace the old COs, and eliminate the position of "DO", that is a permanent expense reduction.

Even more cost-cutting - what are these guys saving their money for?

As respectful_observer mentions, some DO's have trod on a lot of heads to get where they are.
It will be interesting to see how they are received as they tumble back down to the level of those they have previously abused and humiliated.

There will be many DO's who try to assert themselves as superior CO's, finding it hard to let go of all the power they once had, refusing to acknowledge their demotion.

What's that law about unintended consequences?

Why would they be "pleased" to inform us? Usually when a for-profit organization announces a round of layoffs or otherwise disrupts the lives of their employees, they at least make a pretense of regret that it has to be done. But these guys say they are "pleased".

"Be careful how you treat those on the way up,
You will meet them again on the way down."

Oh, sweet, sweet life and all its unpredicted twists! This is beautiful!

It seems to me that the DO's that I was around enjoyed being in that power position with all of it's adoration. There's one that i especially remember being a real jerk his name was manera or something like that we were all at a restaurant and he was positively rude and unkind to the young man waiting on our table. His behavior was embarrassing to all of us and i thought he's so used to treatlng young jw men that way and watching them cower under his so called authority it was just second nature to him.

When organizations find themselves in financial trouble, the permanent layoff usually begins with unessential, low-level workers .... and then middle management. The D.O.'s are going the way of the City Overseers.

Now it seems that Circuit Overseers will report directly to the Branch Representative (Zone Overseer).

    Keepin' the reins tight!

Remember that all of the changes the Org. has made this past year is being used to confuse/confound the publishers. It gives the impression that the WT is "on the move!!!" and you better keep in pace - so you don't think about why Jesus hasn't taken action upon this wicked world for 100 years...

I didn't get that either. Why is this good news? I don't see how this benefits the average JW. These folks are expert as turning bad news into just another blessing from Jehoober. Spin masters at their best!

Plenty of the R&F don't even know who their District Overseer is; they only came around once a year at the 2-day circuit assemblies and then vanished for another year.

Now that the 2-day circuit assemblies are being dismantled and 'simplified' into what the special assembly days currently are, the D.O. is essentially unnecessary. I venture to say that he won't even be missed by most - most the R&F didn't even get to shake hands with him, and the C.O. probably won't miss being 'hounded' and 'supervised' by him.

Just their way of spinning things.

Remember when the Awake from twice a month to once a month?

There was a giant glowing 20-point headline in the Kingdom Ministry: MORE EMPHASIS ON THE BIBLE!!! !!! !!!

Then buried down at the end of like paragraph 4 was something like: Oh, by the way, we're going to print it only once a month now.
