A propaganda piece copy-pasted from genesis. Likely because the texts was assembled from competing versions of the same basic myths. Unintentionally it show how the bible view women as a sort of property.

Who would like to live in a country ruled by the sort of men who would invent this stuff? I feel the closest thing we have to this world-view today is the least civilized areas of afghanistan.

    You said:

it show how the bible view women as a sort of property.

Not so. It merely reflects the worldview of the people who lived in that time and age. Have you read the mesopotamian Code of Ur-Nammu [circa 2100 BC]? you will find similar views on women as property.

'27 When her master got up in the morning and opened the door of the house and stepped out to continue on his way, there lay his concubine, fallen in the doorway of the house, with her hands on the threshold.
28 He said to her, “Get up; let’s go.” But there was no answer. '
..Besides the fact that he gave her up as a sacrifice to be gang raped, his total lack of concern or awareness of what she has been through at this point suddenly strikes me as unrealistically callous, having read this again.. We wouldn't even act in that way with a dog that has just been massively abused, can you imagine?? ''alright, you've had a lie down now boy, let's go..''

EdenOne: If you wish to claim the authors of the bible did not view women as a sort of property it is not a very logical argument to say people in general viewed women as property at the time. In fact, that would seem to support my view.

defender of truth: It is a very good point with the dog. Most of us treat dogs better than the authors of the bible felt many humans should be treated.

It makes me despair at those who claim to take their moral code from the bible.

I've read stories in history books about what catholics did to 'heretics' and all in the name of God. I don't think the stories in the bible are much different. They did bad things and all in the name of God. When Jesus came he showed that the God they were teaching about was very different to the one he knew and taught to his disciples.

Hearing a lot of this kind of activity happening in India.

Gang rape seems to be an acceptable pastime there!

The 'god' of the OT makes me despair.

He had the ability to show profound kindness to the human family, to lift them up from the savagery of ancient times & show them the way to live in peace.

Instead according to the OT he showed himself to be god of bloodshed & war instead of a peacemaker.
