Where it is considered unacceptable is if one pioneers while on unemployment, because technically they should be supporting themselves as the bible says to. Someone on unemployment technically should not have their pioneer application accepted ie they are not supposed to go on the dole to pioneer because it's a bad witness.

That might be the official "rule" but I've seen it happen here all the time. Isn't it wonderful how Jehovah provides unemployment benefits while a faithful JW pioneers during their layoff!

    ABS. re time records.

The wt in South Africa would readily hand to the then govt such records as a goad to move/force/prod brothers to more field service.

If they showed low hours (commitment) they were destined for induction into the army.

I wonder if the wts would be so keen in these other countries to hand over jw's records if asked so the govts could re-determine whether the individuals were entitled to social welfare for being unemployed.

    Imagine the headlines.!

I personally know a brother who was claiming Disability & Unemployment benefits due to his "condition", but was employed by the RBC to help build Kingdom Halls!!

The Govt. decided he no no longer qualified for Disability Allowance, and that he was fit to return to work!

I can't feel sorry for his loss of income.

I know a pioneer couple who are both on benefits. The wife is the "carer". The guy has lots of health problems ie; high cholesterol, diabetes BUT these problems could be solved if he lost weight - he's a greedy bugger!!!!

zeb, I grew up in South Africa under the "then govt" and the government made no distinction dependent on your hours on my watch. Can you substantiate your suggestion?

A congregation I was in had over half of the publishers on welfare.

I would say that half of my KH was on welfare. There were also foster mothers who despised the children. I did npt know the kids were in foster care. These kids were beat badly in the back of the KH. If you can go out in field service, you can work. If you can go out in field service for countless hours and climb high hills, you can go to vocational school. There was no shame. My family refused welfare during the Great Depression.

The welfare culture pervaded the KH. Visiting a suburban hall was a treat. The WT knew how to play into the welfare state. I was young and I knew it was wrong. Both my parents worked in factories. We ended up helping to support the low life in the KH. Most of these people were on welfare when they converted. The WT theology was a convenient excuse.

    Yes,

When I was active there were several that I knew of on welfare and elders on disability. In fact one elder in the construction trade I knew was not working so my husband (not a JW) called him and offered him a job, but was told No he can't work due to being injured and on disability. Same week my husband was driving to pick me up from house next to this elder, saw him with surf board heading up to his car when he saw my husband's truck coming down the street, he ducked down so not to be seen, but he was seen!

My husband was so disgusted and I had no answer to why this elder would do this but I never questioned the elder or told anyone until after I faded.

There are so many living off the system but I guess thinking they are out in service some way justifies their actions.

I went to several congregations while I was a JW. Most people worked hard and only those who needed help got it. I never knew any pioneers on public assistance. There is no shame in seeking help if you need it.
