Best landlord I ever had was a lawyer ... he also fixed me up with a top ambulance chaser when I was incapacitated by a car accident, and is an all-round nice guy. Best boss I ever had was a lawyer .... he's a trust fund baby, and VP of the telephone company ... a great mentor, and very compassionate man who does a lot of good deeds with his money.

Worst scumlord I ever had was a lawyer ... he cut off heat and hot water in the winter to get the tenants to move so he could jack up the rents. Second worst scumlord I ever had was a lawyer .... he's a trust fund baby, and we had no heat in mid-winter.

They come in all flavours: the good, the bad, and the ugly. Just like doctors. Just like cops. Just like cashiers at Mickey Dees. People are people. Period.

I think it's good to remember that the Law is not a profession that is (generally, in the 21st century) pursued by people who are passionatie about helping others. I had a friend who had that passion .... after 5 years of trying to eke out a practice by helping the downtrodden, he had to give that up and take a job as a prosecutor so he could pay off his student loans. Modern law is mostly about making money, and lots of it! There's a few saints out there, but the preponderance of the evidence says,,,, nowadays, it's just another career, like a stockbroker, or a surgeon ... money makes the world go round.

Some good points, talesin. Many of the slugs bail out and don't like the word hard w o r k. I've heard for yrs. how these kids get out of law school and are so delusional about the practice and reality. They've worked hard in law school and hate what they're doing - or think they're going to skate now and work an 8 hr. day - meet enjoyable people on their extended, country club lunch hours - leave at 3:00 never to miss Little Johnnie's socker games and be the doting father/husband on weekends/the rest of the time with their families and make half of million a yr. Doesn't happen unless they're representing the mob and that's big hitter criminal work so takes yrs. Maybe the unethical ones get away with it but their reputation catches them.

The dynamics have changed and lawyers are a dime a dozen (not good ones just like every other field). Most all of their wives work and not because it's their passion. There's an old saying how the lazy ones go into politics (ez livelihood/money) - some of them make good judges (it becomes their calling so to speak) but flip side of coin big hitter lawyers who love the law and representing humans would never consider this cut in pay.

Oh, the untrue stereotypes. Lawyers do tend to be helpers. Does every lawyer on earth want to help people? No. There are certain personalities who are drawn to the profession. The problem is most people who are not businesspeople see lawyers in times of great stress. They tend to see graduates of the worst law schools in the area.

Criminal lawyers are not criminal. It is patently untrue and an ignorant remark. Law is so vast that you have a bit of everything. I never met a criminal from Harvard, Yale, Columbia, etc. Supreme Court justices are not criminals. Of course, the poster may know a lot more criminal lawyers than I do.

Some people cannot be educated. Also, I know many trust fund babies. There is nothing wrong with trust fund babies. Maybe people wish they were one. I can speak to their moral character. Trust fund babies are human.

There is nothing wrong with highly bright and skilled people earning money. It is not a new phenomena. in ancient times, bright and skilled people earned money. The JW is still in some people here.

    I'm with JeffT.

"If I wanted to slur an entire class of workers, it would be the people that design automated phone answering systems."

I felt that I was taken care of by every lawyer I have ever needed. I think the entire justice system is flawed, as it uses the adversarial system with assumed "winners" and "losers". The "winners" are the ones who play the game the best. It also assumes rationality at the foundation of our decision-making. I wonder also at the reliability of witnesses, considering how easy it is to deceive our senses, or even manufacture memories.

Generally lawyers have an earned arrogance, so tend to treat their admins like imbeciles. If only they recognized how often they are carried by this unrecognized under-class.

I dont' believe lawyers are evil. They just want to represent their clients and to make a lot of money doing it. There are many good lawyers and there are alot of crappy sleezy lawyers. You have to do your homework. I think lawyers are necessary in our society.
