My father smoked for sixty years. He didn't get lung cancer but the last few years of his life were miserable. His lungs were shot so that he could only walk a couple of steps around the shops with me before he had to stop and rest, gasping for breath. I know you are probably not advocating smoking but I just wanted to say that because people say, oh not everyone gets cancer from smoking. Which is true but it makes your old-age hell. Just sayin...

I get what you mean about the inconsistency. I can kind of understand that some alcohol in moderation is supposed to be good for you in some ways. Moderate red wine is supposed to be good for the heart, though any amount increases cancer risk. Ok so the jury's out...BUT.....

What about sunbathing and sunbeds? - as in lying out in the sun all day on a beach in Greece or going to a salon regularly? The amount of JW sun worshippers is unbelievable! I have read secular articles that say the cancer risk of lying in the sun is greater than the risk from smoking. Ok I'm a big hypocrite here. I have been the world's worst sun worshipper and my doctor tells me I should probably expect to get skin cancer as a result - but it always struck me as odd that I could deliberately put my health at great risk like that and no one would raise an eye brow - but have one cigarette and you'll get caught in a rugby scrum of elders pouncing on you and your congregation friends shaking their heads at how worldly and rebellious you are...

I hope that's not hijacking the thread. I think it's kind of on the same lines as the OP. But basically, I totally get where you're coming from...

So did this June 1st 2014 WT article discuss the original reasons why smoking was forbidden for true Christians? That reason being spiritism, of course...

A lot of 'contaminated' foods, too:

GMOs (genetically modified organisms), cloning, hormones (makes chicken breasts larger and cows produce more milk, amongst other reasons for use), etc etc in the USA. S. Korea and a lot of other Asian allies refuse to import US beef (not 100% sure off the top of my head, but I think rice might be included in the ban). Europe also has a ban on importing US beef, but not sure if it's due to genetic shit or mad cow disease. Many countries in Europe will not import our grains. If memory serves, Mexico has banned certain veggie imports from the US, too.

OTOH, Dow chemical and other companies in Europe create and distribute pesticides for import to the USA, all/most of which are banned for use in many Europian nations. Colony Collapse Disorder (bee hive collapse/deaths) was determined to be directly linked to the use of neonicotinoid pesticides (derived from nicotine). What about use in the USA? Nope. We use em.

The White house restricts where its food comes from, relying on in-house grown veggies. IMO, that speaks volumes.

The gov body knows jack shit about what harms a person, and could care less about anything except total control of the minds of their money-donors. Sign over your money and properties before you croak "in this system" o' t'ings. Ya know.. because you didn't just squander the only non-refundable thing a person truly has: TIME.

A lifetime wasted funding those brooklyn charlatans is the biggest drag on any person's health. Fuck each and every one of those bastards with a pinecone. To your health, ya bitches.

edit: just to be clear why I went on about other hazardous crap: why doesn't watchtower tell its followers to avoid other so-called health hazards?

Answer: mind control. To make themselves appear as holy and omniscient.

Actually, in that part of the world are many traditional alternatives to smoking. Khat(mostly chewed) has been long used in that region and while illegal in some countries, it is legal in Israel (these days, in times past, no one was regulating such things at all).

I have a visceral objection to religion (any, including mine) taking something like that and presuming to tell us "God's view on smoking(or whatever)". Which tells you exactly what they think of THEMSELVES-They have elevated themselves to diety.

We can make judgements on things that are good or bad for us (or family life, or the environment or to animals) and use our conscience as humans in the decision making process. Some are moral/ethical (to us), but they are NOT directed by God and no man should presume to tell us so when God has not spoken.

OTOH, the law forbidding it? Whole other argument. I am actually in favor of laws on that one. To hell with freedom of expression. (Thats not me being God, that's me wanting to breathe freely). Different discussion altogether.

I had this discussion with my brother (a COBE/PO), when we had our last BIG talk. I was discussing the inconsistency of WTBS use of verse to create their own life and death rules/laws. I told him if the society said "we don't want tobacco users/smokers in our religion" I would understand and respect that. But I have an issue when they apply Bible verse to condemn one thing as wrong and ignore many other things that can be considered unclean or a defiling the body, (or whatever term du jour they lift from a Bible verse). I told him if they wanted to go down that road, then the Mornons are more faithful to the principle than the JW's.

Drugs are also banned, but not coffee which is also a drug. Makes perfect sense. Masturbation is forbidden, but not alcohol. Which is worst? The prohibitions are arbitrary.
