Congratulations on exercising critical thinking skills early in life. You will save yourself from much anguish and many wasted years.

Good luck. Do the right thing, be a good person, and enjoy the gift of life.

    Build a life worth living.

Nice to know you. Your brother in law sounds a lot like my ex brother in law. A self rightious piece of garbage. Still holy then thou yet most of his children are either disfunctional or no longer JW's.

Welcome Yondaime, Will you share what your father told your BIL about your going to college? Other JWs who are your age might benefit from learning your Dad's reasoning.

The best advice for you is show your Dad how much you love him and make him proud of what you do in college. Help your Dad to become involved in time-consuming non-jW hobbies/activites that he loves. Ask your Dad simple questions that will encourage him to learn how to crtically think for himself and encourage him to use the internet. Have you read any information from cult-exit couselors like Steve Hassan's books (i.e., "Combatting Cult Mind Control", "Releasing the Bonds: Empowering People to Think for Themselves", and (his latest book) "Freedom of Mind: Helping Loved Ones Leave Controlling People, Cults and Beliefs"), visited his website www.freedomofmind.com, and watched his FREE videos on his website?

Does your Dad use thought-stopping platitudes? If he does, learn how you can overcome them every now and then to help his authentic persona to overcome his cult persona.

Peace be with you and everyone, who you love,

    Robert

Just a suggestion from an older person. I fought to go to college. It was very scary b/c I was too afraid to ask for help. I've practiced law and lived in Manhattan. It is not a trade skill or college. People do well who can combine both areas of expertise. I've met a lot of theatre and craft people over the decades. They are paid very well. Not everyone has to go to college. What is clear is that education is more important than ever. Sometimes I feel members spend too much time here praising college. I know a film star who only finished high school. A degree from any old college may no longer be competitive compared to someone who has completed an apprenticeship.

High schools seem poor at explaining how one prepares for these jobs. I am so glad I chose a liberal arts college but I would have liked to know all my options.

Your dad is a far sighted and great bloke. I cant see him being an elder for much longer and that is their loss not his nor yours.

You have not picked off the band-aide you have sliced open the abscess!

Let us know how college goes for you.

Welcome. I left and went to college too. Had two pedophiles I knew in the congregations. You are on the right track. When you get into college, make friends with the counselors and let them know your situation as a JW. Just in case elder dad goes all JW on you, they are the best people in the know to set you up with tuition money, grants, jobs, etc.
