Let me take a stab at this.
Bro-in-law is a young elder, probably 30 ish - out to make a name for himself as a put 'em right zealot with a KS elder book in one hand, branch letters to elders in the other and an eye to being "used" at circuit or district regional level on items as a circuit overseer's golden boy.
Dad has been round the block - say 50+, and by his comments re: the GB he truly knows the score (has his KH given up thousands of dollars of saved up funds recently?) He remembers how his own Mother (and unbelieving Father?) argued about getting an education and that he believed heavily in the 70's and 80's and his best years have passed him by.
I would say Bro-in-law (new breed of elder not aware of '75, the generation of 1914 pre-1995 and is happy with the rubberband overlappy crap cuz it's a comin' so soon!) has been needling for a while and is well aware of the "examine qualifications" letter of an appointed man who "approves" of a son or daughter going to college for non-society approved reasons. (i.e. property law and pedo damage limitation law)
There will be fall-out and I reckon Dad will resign or get pushed over this. The wild card is the Mother. Where is she in all of this?
To the OP - college is good but like a previous poster said, don't discount other options. Running your own business whether based on selling solutions, a trade or a profession like e.g. accountancy can be good too.
I'm probably miles off target, but hey!

Good morning from here! Good for you! You have a brain, and can think! Most likely because of your dad's influence?
Our family saw bad things happen for years, and my husband/elder, always was on the side of 'right', tried to straighten them out. The BIG PIC is hard to see at first.. I am not sure if people realize that these things happen all over the world alllll the time. That is the problem, but with the internet, these things are being exposed.
You cannot say "our organization is the best", we are "all over the world, have great friendship, love among the brothers, etc" and then, when you see that the corruption, the politics, the 'everything behind the curtain' exists up to the top level, say "Oh, ummmmm I thought it was good." All other religions are being put down because of corruption etc., so why can't JW's be held to the same level of accountability, the same standards?
Some people, and to me it seems like younger people, are able to see thru the clouds, and don't need to have tons of info about wrong doctrines, are able to have morality the issue, as it should be. Why does "by this all will know you are my disciples by the love among yourselves", "you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free" not matter when it comes to "JW.ORG?"
(Galatians 1:8) 8 However, even if we or an angel out of heaven were to declare to YOU as good news something beyond what we declared to YOU as good news, let him be accursed. . .
(Mark 13:32) 32 “Concerning that day or the hour nobody knows, neither the angels in heaven nor the Son, . . .
(Acts 17:10-11) . . .Immediately by night the brothers sent both Paul and Silas out to Be·roe′a, and these, upon arriving, went into the synagogue of the Jews. 11 Now the latter were more noble-minded than those in Thes·sa·lo·ni′ca, for they received the word with the greatest eagerness of mind, carefully examining the Scriptures daily as to whether these things were so.
It wasn't "Do whatever Paul and Silas tell you to do, even if they tell you to jump off a bridge"
The new kingdom song, "Listen, Obey and be Smashed"!

When you are awake to TTAT (you don't call it that) feelings of resentment start bubbling inside but you keep quiet, possibly for years.
Eventually you can't help but verbalise, possibly with in-family as you already know by this stage you can't trust
anyone at the k hall. You listen in one meeting night via the phone link because you have lost all impetus to go and
are amazed when you find yourself shouting scathing and even abusive comments towards the direction
of your phone throughout the entire programme. Exiting wt.org does not take long after this stage.
Your dad's well on his way out IMO.
My daughters were 17 and 16 when we left. Home educated and qualification-less.
You should see them now - two and a half years later! Completely de-programmed, college-qualified and successfully employed. Happy!!
Go, go, go! Your story is just great. Have a great life. x
