Yes, indeed.
But fundamentalist Christians - by and large - can't really help themselves.

They're almost always extremely conservative, and a foundational axiom of conservative ideology (religious or secular) is that people are fundamentally bad (and, therefore, need to be kept on a short leash for their own damn good and everyone else's).

With that in mind, automatically imputing wrong motives would come as naturally as breathing.
