  On the other hand - cutting fingers must be some "Oriental thing". I remember watching a television news program some years ago, on South Korean students protesting against some government action, and they did it by standing in a long line and then the first one cut off his little finger, the next in line came forward and cut off his, the next one and so on, tens upon tens of them ..........

  So not so unlikely, then, as cutting off finger(s) is some sort of protest.
