I think i was a little late on the Three Dog Night song, Comf has already ferreted it out!

I usually read all the text and then go back and check the links. I guess I'll have to change my procedure! Comf, I don't know any of those bytes.

OK, time to revive this thread again with a few challenges. I've tried to not make them quite as hard this time (I hope):

    1. Your mother's ghost stands at your shoulder
Face like ice, just a little colder.
    2. Through all efforts you've been changing, getting a little bit better, no doubt
The doctor bit was so far out
    3. Ah, the lovers as they run through the night
Leaving nothing for the others but to choose off and fight
    4. Love, like the autumn sun
Should be dying, but it's only just begun
    5. The winds of change are blowing wild and free,
You ain't seen nothing like me yet.
    6. My father was a fisherman, my mama was a fisherman's friend
And I was born in the boredom and the chowder.

Madman, #1 is "Triad", written by David Crosby, performed by Jefferson Airplane. #4 is Barbra Streisand, but I don't know the name of the song.

Mac, you've missed out! The "Music, music" thingie is "Over My Head" by King's X. It's a pseudo-spiritual thing (they're a pseudo-spiritual band) about being surrounded by angelic music while praying. Here's a snippet that contains the title. Maybe it'll be more recognizable.

The other one is "Zoot Suit Riot" by Cherry Poppin' Daddies. Here, also, is a snippet where the title is sung.

Comf, right on #1 (although my favorite version is the one on the CSNY "Four Way Street" Album). I don't know of a Streisand version of #4 (though I'm not saying it doesn't exist). Hers wasn't the hit version, in any event.

Interesting the way you picked that off. I thought the other 5 would get answered quickly, and "Triad" would be the stumper of the bunch. Shows how much I know...

I've decided I'm wrong about #4. I was thinking of Streisand's "Evergreen" but those lyrics aren't it.

Triad always interested me, first because the concept was so foreign to my nature (I kept trying to figure out how somebody could want to live like that), and later because I liked the use of imagery in the "mother's ghost" lines (his mother doesn't even have to be dead for this to work). Finally, after years of "looking for the special one for me" I came to understand the reasonableness and functional value of the philosophy of Triad and its twin, Love the One You're With.

None of the others you posted are ringing any bells. Care to add a line or two of lyric?

    "I don't mind stealing bread

From the mouths of the dead

    Cause i'm goin hungryyyyyyyy."

Did Eddie Vedar sing this prior to becoming Pearl Jam? I'm trying to remember the name of this tune. (Temple of the Dog?)

Adding a line or two of lyric where appropriate:

    2. Through all efforts you've been changing, getting a little bit better, no doubt
The doctor bit was so far out
Looking through crystal spectacles, I can see you've had your fun
    3. Ah, the lovers as they run through the night
Leaving nothing for the others but to choose off and fight
And tear at the world with all their might
While the ships bearing their dreams sail out of sight
    4. Love, like the autumn sun
Should be dying, but it's only just begun
Like the twilight in the road up ahead
We can't see just where we're goin'
And all the secrets in the universe...
    5. The storms are raging on the rollin' sea
And on the highway of regret
The winds of change are blowing wild and free,
You ain't seen nothing like me yet.
    6. My father was a fisherman, my mama was a fisherman's friend
And I was born in the boredom and the chowder.
And when I reached my prime, I left my home in the Maritimes,
Headed down the turnpike to New England, sweet New England

OK, dead giveaways here - I'm expecting massive surges of recognition any minute now...

Arite, arite, here's a fresh crop for yazz. Anybody can't peg at least two of these is a nu-nu.

    1. So we tanned his hide when he died, Clyde,
And that's it a-hanging on the shed.
    2. Hey there, farmer
      Put away the DDT, now
    3. Do you catch it on your tonsils
And you heave it left and right?
    4. When I come home, baby,
My house is dark and my pots are cold
    5. Histories of ages past
      Unenlightened shadows cast
      Down through all eternity
      The crying of humanity
    6. The sea has washed across your face
      And taken of its fill
    7. I hope and I pray that some day
I'll be the vision of your hap--happiness

Dayum, Madman, you've got me stumped all around on those. I'm sure I'm about to be mightily embarrassed when somebody gets them and I have to go, "Ooooooh, yeeeaaaaaaahhhhh I remember that now!"

    Hey there, farmer
    Put away the DDT, now

Big Yellow Taxi, Joni Mitchell (and many others - even Dylan did a version)

Do you catch it on your tonsils
And you heave it left and right?

Does Your Chewing Gum Lose Its Flavor on the Bedpost Overnight? by I don't know who...a Dr. Demento classic if ever there was one.

    Histories of ages past
    Unenlightened shadows cast
    Down through all eternity
    The crying of humanity

Hurdy Gurdy Man by Donovan...from the same Greatest Hits album as one of the unidentified snippets in my most recent post on this thread...

I hope and I pray that some day
I'll be the vision of your hap--happiness

Earth Angel - again, can't remember the group and am too lazy to go look it up right now.

Dayum, Madman, you've got me stumped all around on those. I'm sure I'm about to be mightily embarrassed when somebody gets them and I have to go, "Ooooooh, yeeeaaaaaaahhhhh I remember that now!"

May not happen; I'm starting to suspect that you and I are the only ones following this thread anymore...
