How big of a problem is apostasy.

I know this has nothing to do with 'apostasy' but with the aging Baby Boomer population, getting older, sicker, and subsequently dying is also another reason people leave and never go back. ;0)

A silent apostate is otherwise known as :

Spiritually sick : depressed : fallen victim to Satan's world : lost his faith : become apathetic , NB you would not be apathetic if you believed that Armageddon was imminent.

NNB . A lot of elders know this but do not want to rock the boat by pushing the inactive to admit apostasy and then have to d/f him - so they leave him alone

In terms of absolute reality, that is correct. In terms of relative acceptance, I think most JWs "believe" as long as it is convenient to. Apathy is more a form passive-aggression, where actions speak louder than words, (or even conscious thoughts), so while they may consciously "believe" at some level, the apathetic demonstrate disbelief by their actions.

That is still not the same as apostasy, which in practice is a deliberate conscious effort, even if covert. The apathetic would defend the WT in a heartbeat, if held to it. Been there done that on both the giving and receiving end.

The WTS defines it with much wider latitude.

Apathy could definitely fall under that umbrella if they felt it was in their best interests.
