Andee, As ever you put my thoughts down a damn sight better than I can.
Moe, I know where you're coming from. I guess I worry too much! For someone who has been through so much crap in her life you are one together lady!

Amanda,
I love the fact that you have such a big heart! You're like me: my heart hurts when I hear of human suffering. Yes, one person suffering is one too many, but just remember that we can only do so much. If you are doing everything you can to give charitably and teach your child to have a giving heart, then you're doing a good job to start off with. Perhaps you can take your passion and get involved in a charity or organization that does help the needy. I know it's little, but I'm on a mission to collect hotel soaps, shampoos, lotions, etc from my work travels. I've even gotten my future father-in-law collecting his travel/hotel stuff. A local shelter here in Dallas loves those things to give to their homeless guests. They're little (easy for the homeless to carry), cheap for us, and something the homeless could really use. Like I said, it's little, but it's something I know I can do to help.

What you said is exactly my point in my "socially retarded" post. Good for you for realizing that! One of these days, both of us will be healthy enough to help others beyond what's normal.

Xander --
The third world countries have a long history of proving they can't manage themselves. A major UN involvement (by force, if necessary) could solve a lot of the problems. But, no first world country would back such an endeavor - certainly not the ALL of them that would be needed.
I agree!

Also, again, I am not trying to trivialize anybody's personal issues and need for healing. But, as for me myself, this is something that weighs heavy on my mind, and something I felt I wanted to talk about.
Amanda,
Thanks! I think as xJWs the "I have suffered" feeling, while many times justified, should be balanced with the reality of what many others in the world and even many in the U.S. have had to deal with.
Thinking outside the box is healthy.
Thanks again,
IW
revdrjohnson - I have numerous friends from Cuba. There are many things that tourists do NOT see. Don't be so foolish to think that Castro would allow America to see these things.
MrMoe, Miami is chock full a people who are from Cuba. And everybody has 'numerous friends' who say this and who say that -- and I realize that there are things you are allowed to see and things that you are not.
But YOU said that the military would beat a person to a pulp for owning furniture -- and I simply asked can you substantiate your statement. You know: something we can see? Surely somebody -- maybe in the last wave of Marielitos -- has smuggled out some evidence that what you say is happening is indeed ... happening? Otherwise your statement sounds like so much hyperbole. And so much overkill that it detracts from the point that you sounded like you were trying to make, in the first place: that "we don' have it so bad compared to people in some other places."
Y'kno ... the old axiom "I thought I was unfortunate, 'cause I only had one foot. And then I met a man with no legs!"
For a scary second here, I thought I was going to start hearing, "so you realize man's government can't solve all of our problems, only something that God's Kingdom can do." <whoo>
rev - Friends of mine (grown professional adults who I would trust with my life and would never lie to me) upon visiting their parents in Cuba purchased furniture for their parents. Only a certain class of people can purchase furniture there from the way they explained things to me. The only piece of furniture they had was a 3-legged table and when they left they had a house full. After they left, the military did find out what they had and all furniture was confiscated and he and his wife were beaten very badly. Sad, but a very true experience.
joeschmoe, sorry for the delay.....long phone call.
This thread is scary....it reminds me of all the reasons JW's embrace the borg. Armageddon....then Paradise.....a perfect life, with no stress, pain, suffering, etc.
Huh? Puffsrule, I know your post was a few back, but I'm just wondering if you can flesh this thought out for me a little bit. I guess I don't get it.
I think the issue is: we've got it easy and are spoiled. Others have countered that they don't want that kind of thinking to belittle the kind of damage done by the WT.
I was trying to point out (apparently badly ) that this reminds me of how/why my mother got involved with the JW's in the first place. It was 1967 and 1975 was not too far off. "wouldn't you love to live in a lovely society, no pain, no suffering, no hunger....on and on."
The things happening on earth are why the borg is enticing. It will get better. Just join us and praise Jehovah and you will be saved. All the evil governments, Babylon, etc. will be destroyed.
I would not belittle the pain anyone here has gone through. I think pointing out how easy we have it compared to third world countries is comparing apples to oranges.
The pain of the borg is totally different than living with no food or running water.
When we debate what can be done to make it right, it opens the door for a JW to say armageddon and paradise. I hope this makes sense...

This is awesome! Wonderful thought!

"Why don't they just move to where the food is?"
