My point, slip, was that "were the food is" moves around throughout human history. So, why should we bemoan that in this early part of the 21st century the wealth is in the US, Britain, etc., the 'western world'. It won't stay that way for long, it never does.

Puff,
I think you make excellent points.
Having "hope" is very powerful. Especially so when the living conditions surrounding an individual is so bleak and it seems there is no workable solution available to remedy the situation.
Goes a long way explaining why the WTS is growing in third world countries.

If given the choice, I think I would have rather done without furniture than to be sexually or physically abused. Today, if I had to make the choice, I would give up all of my furniture for my freedom from the JW religion.
Life is not always sunshine and roses for everyone, some people never had anyone to talk to when they were growing up about things that hurt them. While I am happy for what I have, I think people need to talk about their problems...let things out.

My whining is relative to my culture. I don't apologize for being born in the U.S. or much anything else out of my control. Too ask me to put myself in their position is impossible without being born into their position. I can empathize but that is it. Xander hit the nail right on the head. I learned this in Anthro. by the way, you can't dump a bunch of money into a country and think that it is going to do anything. Using money to fix problems is an American idea and it rarely ever works. You have to work in the confines of the given culture. Too often we really believe that people would be better off (or that they want to be) if they were just like us. This type of ethnocentrism leads to Somalia's around the world.
Money for these starving countries is way down the list in terms of things we need to help them with. People in Africa are dying of aids like its the spanish flu. We could fly over 500 billion condoms. How many of those do you think would get used? They are stuck in a vicious cycle of death due to their culture not having changed along with the rest of the industialized world. You could drop $100 bills all over the continent and it still wouldn't do any good.

That is the biggest problem in much of the third world. When industrialization started, they wanted no part of it. For religious or cultural reasons, or just plain poor leadership, they fell behind the curve.
And, once you fall behind THAT curve, it becomes harder and harder to catch up. Only, their cultural/religious/leadership continues to teach industrialization is evil - indeed, many Americans seem to be of the same opinion industrialization is harmful.
Well, without it, look where we'd be. Industry makes jobs. Jobs make money. Money makes commerce (which can make jobs on its own). The US is very much a commercialized nation now (with all its inherent instability), but third word countries have, for a large part, never even become industrialized.

An interesting topic that is along these lines is NAFTA - the agreement that would allow no taxation between US<->Mexico trading. Many complained that this was bad for the US because it meant large companies here would move their factories to Mexico where labor was cheaper.
And, in the short term, they are right.
But, overall, what IS better for the US? More lower-wage jobs for the short term here? Or, long-term, the possibility of building an actual 1st-world country on our southern border?
Again, throwing money at the problem won't help. Third world countries don't need money. They need to be willing to modernize, and the 1st-world countries need to be willing to help (IE., invest in them).

Puffsrule,
Gave up on you and went out for a pint! Thanks for the reply. I guess I just wasn't having a problem with keeping the apples and oranges seperate. While I can see how local world conditions can affect how the message of the witnesses is recieved, nothing about those circumstances changes the way the witnesses rob people of their personal freedoms. Ok, I had a couple pints. Hope I'm making sense.

The almighty dollar plays the biggest role, take for example the ads on tv to send money for needy children,it's a good cause but when you do send money they end up getting about a tenth of a dollar. This was a subject on 20/20 a couple years back,it's supposed to be a non profit orginization but the money does go to certain people outside the cause,so...you end up giving to the orginization instead.
