America is seen as a bit of a bully - pushing their weight around and dictating what other nations may do, arrogant, but free. Proud too. Oh and they seem a little selfish....only caring about their own economic welfare. Australia is a bit sh*&y about tarrifs and farming at the moment. However, this is the perception of the government of America and NOT the citizens. General Americans are seen as strong, patriotic and socially aware.

I've only eva had dealings with America Sailors when they dock here........are they really a good example of Americans?????? Altho I did have an American teacher once who taught me to appreciate maths.....I'm deeply thankful to him.

The Government is proud and pride comes before a fall.........

I have lived in the US so long now, the cultural shock of the first few years has dissipated.

I can tell you what my friends and relatives in France say about Americans....

No class, no taste, no idea what a good meal is, or a good coffee,

how can anyone get that fat ! Prude on one side, debauched on the other.... etc.

    I speak as I find.

Every American that I have ever met has been warm, generous and polite. Admittedly these are the one's who travel, obviously so, or I wouldn't have met them, however, they themselves tell me that there is an element that have no idea that the rest of the world exists.

A bit like your average Londoner perhaps?

My parents came here from Russia. The land of opportunity for them. They were much more of a patriot that I will ever be. I take much for granted.

Once Europe wakes up you'll get lots of negative answers. Matters little to the rest of us I'd say. Can't please everyone so might as well please ourselves. I think one thing that all will admit is that our country is willing to lay down American lives to assist any of our allies. We've done it before and will do it again. I'm not so sure this is a good thing.

Oh and Vi, those sailors you hang out with aren't nearly as horny as the rest of America.

The best I can come up with...aside from being very proud to live in America is this example:

After the 9/11 attack upon the U.S. there were the media interviewing the people of Pakistan. First off...they blasted the U.S. as far as their policies, and their "materialistic" lifestyle. But the question that most intrigued me was:

"If you had a choice...where would you choose to live?"

    The interesting answer was:

    "In the U.S."

How can you hate everything that we stand for, yet yearn to live here?

We went to Switzerland last summer and several differences I noticed between here and there were:

    Hardly any litter in Switzerland

    Many more overweight people here

Everyone there speaks atleast 3 languages

WAY ahead on recycling and environmental issues there

People here are much warmer and friendlier in general - even outside of Texas
