I have a couple of bibles here and you probably know I am referring to 1 Cor. 13:4 when I ask, "why did Paul say that Love isn't jealous?" KJV uses "envieth"; jw version uses "jealous". Perhaps it's in the translations of the word God used when he was describing himself as jealous. Dunno.

AV - jealous 6; 6
1) jealous (only of God)I am Jehovah your God, who has brought you out from the land of Egypt, from the house of bondage. You shall not have any other gods before Me. You shall not make a graven image for yourself, or any likeness in the heavens above, or in the earth beneath, or in the waters under the earth; you shall not bow to them, and you shall not serve them; for I am Jehovah your God, a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of fathers on sons, on the third and on the fourth generation, to those that hate Me; and doing kindness to thousands, to those loving Me, and to those keeping My commandments. [Exodus 20:2-7 LITV]
The kind of jealousy you described, above is more like 'envy,' and does NOT describe or define a characteristic of God:

I can understand the being a jealous God thing.
Wouldnt you be pissed off if you made something you treasured, then an inferior thing tried to muscle in, and it would do no good whatsoever, leading to the destruction of what you made.
Really not comparable with jealousy in humans, re relationships etc. Besides, what does what Paul wrote down matter? He was a man and his books are simply his opinions and not scripture.

My Oxford dictionary gives a secondary meaning to the word Jealousy : "Watchfully tenacious of rights etc".. . The origin of the word is from the same as zealous
Seen in this light it makes more sense since God is plainly zealous and in the books of the Old Testament he makes clear that he would not tolerate idolatry or mixed faith worship.
Nothing to do with the destructive human failing of jealousy, as we know it

Why do we have this common belief that God has to follow the rules he has given to us?
