Well, I'm not exactly good, but I play flute and guitar....sort of.

    Hillary,

: Though I have never actually heard him sing 'The Dip**** Blues', I understand from mutual friends that Farkel plays a very good piano.

I'm not a fan of the Blues. Heard one, you've heard them all. Although I will say that Dave Brubeck wrote a fascinating piece called "Far More Blue." It was a blues song but in 5/4 time! I play it. He also wrote a piece called "Cathy's Waltz" which was a "waltz" in 4/4 time! I also play that one. In fact, I love everything Dave Brubeck and Paul Desmond wrote.

    Blues music is for whiners!

I play guitar and sing. I've been writing my own songs for about five years or so ( you have plenty of material when you start to question the org and all that heavy stuff). Occasially I play an "open mike nite". It's fun and it's a great outlet.

HS, musician.com is pretty quiet. I've been on it for about a year, and I've gotten five, maybe six hits. Happily, one of them led to me playing with the current band. However, now that I've moved to the new place, it's an hour drive across Dallas to where we practice. I'm hoping for another hit, from closer to this area. My living room is pretty spacious, and would have room for us to jam in it regularly, which would not be a problem with a cohabitor since I live alone. The only problem is, these guys for some reason want it stadium-decibels even at practice. I set up, and the bassist comes around and rigs up mics on the bass and snare, and runs it through the PA. I mean, this is practice, for crying out loud (through a PA). So I offered my place on condition of us keeping the volume within reasonable neighborhood limits, but they didn't get too excited about it.

Now, here's a coincidence for you! As I was sitting here typing this, I got notice of an email coming in. Check this out! Here's what it says:

It looks like you and I have much in common musically. I am glad
to see that you are from Red oak. My name is Everett. I play
guitar and live in ovilla. I have been playing in cover bands
that have been practicing far away and am getting tired of
driving. I am 42 years old, have excellent equipment and time to
    play and rehearse.

I would like to get together and see what we come up with. I am
currently jamming with some guys in arlington but would prefer
to start or join a band that is closer to home.

    How cool is that? Woohoo!

lol....'Well, I woke up this morning, Dip**** on my mind'.....Yes, it does not quite gel does it...lol

I once had the great pleasure of meeting and talking Jazz with both Morello ( in my mind one of the classiest drummers that I have ever heard ) and Desmond many eons ago in my youth. I must say that I agree with you about Brubeck, he has the rare ability to simplify in his music some of the most complex mental rhythms.

He is still playing live, and as well as ever these days I understand. Though he has to be guided to his piano, once there the Stardust glitters.

I play drums...mostly percussion. I have congas, bongos, several Native American drums, lots of noise makers, and a couple of drums I can't describe..*L* Haven't played in a while becuase most of them need new heads and that's not cheap.

Cool. I did a collaborative tune with a Native American who had lots of authentic NA perscussion instruments. Some of that stuff was soooo awesome. Using real animal parts and stuff!!

I started out playing drums when I was 6. Nothing like the sound of a pounding double bass kit if you ask me. Re: drum heads not being cheap, NOTHING in being a muscian is cheap. Especially if your into recording like me. Any recordings of you playing available on the net. Pics???

As a guitarist I am a legend in my own mind. As a songwriter I had a few successes, probably before most of you were born....lol

Part of my work these days is in music production and marketing. I also arrange the odd gig here and there if I can combine some interesting chemistry. I am presently working on a songwriters in the round gig in the fall for the North West ( US ), please let me know if any of you are interested and I will send details.

Great!! What do you mean by successes? Published and made some dough? I was born in '59. You're not that old are ya?!?!?

How so with music production? In the studio? Are you a producer? Marketing?? Curious about that too. You mean promotion and stuff like that? The songwriters in the round sounds terrific. Too bad I'm in the North East...

am learning guitar, I play bass, and I write lyrics......I have a band forming in the process....will be some time before we have anything that I will feel good enough about sharing ( I also play a bit on the didgeridoo)

That's great! How long a bass player? That was the next thing I started playing after the drums. Anything recorded and available to listen to? Didgerdoo? Whoa..Mastered circular breathing??? That is so cool.

    I play the piano.

I took forced lessons as a child, and now I am thankful because it gives me something I can do to relax my mind and be at peace.

Piano is a great composing tool. I mess around with it a little...hacker at best. But I do enjoy it. I believe it can be the most relaxing instrument...the variations on it can be spell binding. I know a keyplayer who is classically oriented that is fantabulous...He takes your brain away with his playing...Sometimes it's good to have the old brain removed for a while, ya know?? Tried recording??

Impressive dude. Went to both pages...awesome kit. Great vintage photos!! We have a lot of similar muscial roots. Have you recorded anything in any of your projects?? Where abouts are you anyway? (If I may ask)

Flute?? I love that sound. When I think of flute, my mind goes to Ian Anderson (Jethro Tull). He was a master at that thing... How long you been playing?? And hey, haven't we crossed paths elswhere?? ;)

    Hey, Farkenstein,

    Blues music is for whiners!

Aw, Farkey, you disappoint me. The blues ain't about whining. It's a homegrown musical style from the deep south (don't let those Chicago fakes fool you). Check out Freddy King at his finest, below, and tell me that's whining. That's, Freddy King the Texas Bluesman, whom you have heard mentioned in Grand Funk's "We're An American Band":

Up all night with Freddy King,
I got to tell you, poker's his thing.
Now, booze 'n ladies keep me right,
As long as we can make it to the show tonight.

In "Big Leg Woman", Freddy expresses his appreciation for his lady, and his joy at being in a relationship with her, with a metaphor that any truebred southerner understands instantly (ain't that right, Wild Turkey).

That ain't whining, Farkey... that comes from down inside, where you live! That's as real as it gets.

Pome, I'm in Dallas... a statement which is incredibly vague if you've ever been to Dallas. It's kind of like saying, "I'm in Connecticut". I was on the north side, but now have moved as far south as I once was north, which puts a considerable distance between me and the band, which is why it's cool that this guy who lives close by has emailed about gigging together.

I used to have a lot more pictures than I do, and some recordings both live and studio. Unfortunately, I went through a rocky period in my life and a lot of possessions like those disappeared somewhere along the way. What I posted is just about all there is. I've suggested recording a session to this current band and they do the head-wagging thing and then promptly forget about it. Oh, well...

Let's see the pics of your kit, man. And your band. Got stuff up on mp3.com?

    HS,

Ditto that on Joe Morello. His long solo on the song Castillion Drums was awesome. I've seen Buddy Rich play too, but Morello was more refined. The only other great drum solo that really rings my chimes is the Gene Krupa solo on that classic Benny Goodman song "Sing, Sing Sing!" There is a San Diego group called Big Time Operator that plays old big-band songs and their version (including the drum solo) of Sing, Sing, Sing is even BETTER than the original.

I saw the Brubeck Quartet in person in 1964 when I was just sixteen years old and couldn't get enough of them. I saw Dave and his SONS play at the University of California San Diego about 26 years ago and his hair was WHITE. Howard Brubeck lives (lived?) in Poway, California, a San Diego suberb and I've always wanted to look him up. He did all the solo piano arrangements of the Quartet's music, including their concert at Carnegie Hall.

    COMF,

I was just yanking your chain about blues music. I love all kinds of music.

    Pomegranate,

I will be recording a lot of my music in MP3 format very soon. Here is a thread where I outline some of the stuff I'm going to record and put up on the Net:

I have played bass on and off for 7 years. Nothing available to listen to yet .....and no unfortuantely circular breathing is still a goal---but I can get a mean sound out
