Dont let your kids be rude.

    Amen, Animal. Amen.

I don't want my kids to smoke and I won't make them stop talking about the damage it does to the body. He is a lot less rude than the pictures on billboards and the warnings on the cartons. Did I mention he is five? He tells people he loves that they shouldn't smoke because he doesn't want them to die. He doesn't say a thing to strangers. If that is rude, so be it.

Tell you what, Princess, it was a 4 year-old that stopped me dead in my tracks. He just came up to me and said: "You waft!" His father immediately apologised and said that the boy had't spent much time with smokers, so he wasn't used to how they smelt. So the father obviously knew to what it was that the boy was referring to.

But, it did really annoy me.

    Thank God!

My kids would never tell an adult how they were wrong in anything they do. It is not thier place to do it and is disrespectful. Mine dont like smoke, I tell them to not get in my face then when I have one lite. Simple solution.

Your initial post said "smokers", not family member smokers.

Hey everyone, ease up on Princess. I know what she means, and you don't, so don't just attack.

The little Prince never offends anyone. He is very charming, and says what is on his mind. I am never shocked by what he says, but think he is open and honest. That is a GOOD quality.

I am a believer in children being polite, but I also recognize that they are little people, and OFTEN say things that embarrass us. You can only control so much that comes out of their mouths. It always irritated the crap out of me when people would tell me to make my very hyperactive 2 year old son quiet down or settle down. HOW?? I used to tell them that if they could tell me how to do it, I would, gladly. Some things take years..............time takes care of many of the things we wish we could stop our kids from doing.

No one is attacking.... I guess I am just trying to understand the diff between smoking comments and not soda/hamburger/hotdog/candy comments. Maybe kids also tell people they chouldnt be fat? I dont know....

I started smoking when I was 14. Quit at 22 when I got baptized (I was found in service, not raised in). When I left the org, I stayed off for a while, but I started playing in a band. One night when we took a break, I had already drunk a couple of bourbon 'n' cokes, and had a good solid buzz on. I came down off the stage to the band's table, and there was a pack of Marlboro 100's on the table, so I spontaneously blurted out, "Gimmie one of those Marlboros!" and it was on again, for another 10 years.

I quit smoking February 1st of 1998 and will never start again. I don't mind the smell of second-hand cigarette smoke by a single person, as for example when we're all walking to a restaurant for lunch and one guy lights up outside. Actually, sometimes it smells kind of nice. But I hate cigarette smoke filling the air, and getting on everything, like in dance halls and AA meetings. When I go to those places I'm unable to enjoy the goings-on because the smoke makes me nausious. Then it sticks all over my clothes and skin, and when I get home the first thing I do is shuck everything off and have a shower, scrubbing my skin hard with the washcloth. My gosh, that's nasty.

Back in my dubbing days, I had the proverbial cleaning business. One contract we had was to do cleanup after new construction in a remodeled newspaper office. There were three floor-to-ceiling windows in this remodeled area, each about 18 inches wide. I used a scrubber on a pole and a squeegee to clean them. They were brown and almost opaque. The brown came off with scrubbing, though, and I had to change my soapy water three times per window, there was so much of it. One of the workers looked at the clean, clear glass and exclaimed, "My gosh! I've worked here for seven years, and I always thought those windows were tinted!"

A friend of mine who was raised a JW but left at 19, started going out to clubs to dance. She was describing one to me once and got on the subject of the smoke. Looking me in the eye with a look of great disgust, she said, "I had to blow my nose afterward because it was all clogged up. My boogers were brown."

Thanks mom, I had a much ruder comment to make but I'll refrain. I stand by my kids and their right to say it like it is. I guess I'm just a lot more liberal with my children's right to speak to adults than Animal is. They see the double standard and are allowed to comment on it.

Feel free to make any comments you like to me... I dont offend. More liberal with your kids? Maybe, maybe not. I only know what you say here. To encourage a 5 yr old to be rude seems like setting him up for some surprises when he gets out into school....
