"It seems to me that it's just the evolution of the economy. If grocery stores sell 'em cheaper, what's the big deal? That's the way of free competition and capitalism. Should we not buy goods at discount stores like Target and Walmart, because they're selling things cheaper? It won't make a difference even if it were right. It's flawed reasoning, imo."
This IS flawed reasoning.I expect most of these replies come from people with no experience of running a business.
1.Buying cheaper is not ALWAYS better.
a.If we want cheaper goods, then shops ,and suppliers have to cut back some where.A supplier will move his factory to another country, thus people in your country will lose jobs, making them poorer and you in the process as these things have a knock on effect, as your work is linked to other peoples wealth.Shops will lower wages also and cut back on staff having the same effect.
b.Some goods require a quality of service. If you buy a computer from a supermarket, there is no service provided for you to set it up or service things for you ,thats why it is cheaper. If you have a problem with it who is going to help? The computer shop?Thats if it still exists, after everyone has bought their computers else where.
c.Shops have to cut down on unprofitable lines, which may be just the thing you require.Goods that don't sell well are subsidized by more profitable ones in other shop to keep a high variety of products. If a shop is to reduce prices it must get ride of these unprofitable lines limiting choice for us.
D.The quality of the goods is often cut. There is a local supermarket that sells cheap food near me.The food they sell is basically crap.Thats what you are buying if you are not prepeared to pay.
E.When the suppermarkets have dominated the market for cheap goods, they will have a monoply, prices can then rise as there is no one else to compare to.
2.Why some shops have to charge more , and how this benifits you.
a.If you require a product that needs a high range of choice, that the shop does not speaclise in.i,e, CD's.A supermarket will only sell chart CD"s as they only make a profit on them.If supermarket sale causes shops to shut you will lose your choice. It depends what you want.To suppliy choice some things will need to be subsidized this will make some things slightly more expensive.
b.Small shops have higher overheads.A supermarket can stack the CD's in a shop already paid for by other goods.A CD shop needs to rent or buy premises, which he has to cover in the price. Also he will have few staff which require a decent wage, which will be higher than a supermarkets crappy wage.
c.A specialist shop can provide a quality of service, which some products require, also they can srvice products bought and will have an understanding of how there products work.Such knowledge is often worth paying for , which can save you time wasted when you dont know how to use your product properly.
There are lots of other things involved too. What a sterile environment our cities will be if all shops are taken other buy mega chain stores .There is usualy knock on effect of demanding cheaper goods, which in the long term effect us.Ever buy something from Ikea? Most of there stuff will fall apart in a few years. You will have to spend more in the future on items to replace the crap you have bought. If you bought a quality ,say table in the first place it may be initaly more expensive but will be better quality and may never nead replacing, saving you money in the long term.
To want every thing cheap is just so short sighted. There is no such thing as a bargen in business, you get what you pay for.
