Downloading "free" music is bad for music, unless a band is giving it away.

There is no such thing as free.If a band can't make money from playing music how can they continue? This also creates a monopoly for the computer industry over music, beside the fact that the qaulity is crap. Its amazing that the quality of music reproduction is going down and down in the name of getting something free.

Any one who think cheap things are a bargin and everything should be cheaper has not rubbed some particular brain cells together and thought about it.

yes, ballistic, you can search muscians, titles, users. I use kaZaA daily and have absolutely no regrets nor any guilt downloading the music.

CDs are overpriced. Why should we allow ourselves to be ripped off to perpetuate a rip-off industry? A CD from Tesco's is exactly the same as a CD from an over-priced independent store. As consumers, the best things for ourselves and for the economy is to buy the best goods available at the cheapest price possible. Small businesses don't have a right to survive, and I certainly won't waste my money propping up someone else's uncompetitive business.

KaZaa and broadband internet rules! It's the best program for downloading that I've used, and I've used several.

Anyhoo, don't large chains get a better deal on more quantities than a small shop that buys less quantity? Most of the suppliers I buy from have a price scale that gets cheaper when more quantity is purchased.

Personally, I like shopping at specialty shops. The owners are more interested in the product they sell and generally are a LOT more knowledgable. Of course, a CD is just a CD.

    Ok,

I'll admit that I own a collection of about 1500 songs downloaded from the internet. I will also admit that I own over 300 CDs that I purchased (most from pawn shops). I will use the internet to find obscure songs that are no longer readily available in record stores. Very often I will download music I have never heard of before and fall in love with it. Next thing you know I'm in the record store buying the latest cd because I can't get all the songs. Last time that happened it was Norah Jones. Such a sweet voice.

The record industry has only to come up with a standard for Mp3s and they would make a fortune. I don't feel sorry for them or the artist. The artist could make a great living singing live if they are that good. If the price is too high for cds people will find other ways to listen to the music they like (for less).

There is no reason for a music cd to cost even close to the price of a Movie dvd. Movies cost much more to produce. They spend much more on promotion and the disc itself costs more. If you argue that movies cost less because they've made their money at the box office then why can't musicians make their money on tour?

    Hmmmm

Lets restate this again.I am talking about this, if you like music and you want choice of good bands to continue then this will apply. If you buy CD's from a supermarket because they are cheaper and your local independants store (if you have any) goes out of business because of it ,then you will no longer be able to buy the music you want , therefore it follows that buying cheap was a FALSE economy.

Can anyone show me why this is wrong?

Funcky D "CDs are overpriced. Why should we allow ourselves to be ripped off to perpetuate a rip-off industry? A CD from Tesco's is exactly the same as a CD from an over-priced independent store."

This is a misunderstanding of the issue.

Something is not overpriced because it is more expensive than another good.Tesco's subsadize their CD sales and make up on the price of your grocceries. You actually pay the same. They only stock chart CD and therefore are garenteed sales. An independant CD store need to make more money on a CD than tesco as he doesn't make his money on grocceries, and has higher overheads. He also offers a far far bigger range of product. His range of product actually make his CD's BETTER value, as when you buy them you are garenteing future choice for YOURSELF.If you buy cheap and independants go out off business then you are killing the wide advaiability of music to YOURSELF.

Just because Tescos is cheaper does NOT mean the independant shop is RIPPING you OFF.He has different costs to cover.

Cd's are not that expensive anyway, even if they could be a few pounds cheaper.

All I'm saying is that our desire for cheapness may cost in the future if we cause small shops with good choice to close.

    Why is this wrong?

"As consumers, the best things for ourselves and for the economy is to buy the best goods available at the cheapest price possible."

The important part is best goods. What qualifies as best goods?Sometimes it is quality , sometimes choice. If you buy something inferer because it is cheaper is that value for money?

If you buy something cheaper and it causes you to lose choice is that value for money?

Small business do deserve to survive for many reasons , most of all the greater quality they often offer, along with personnal service.

I wonder how many here would try to buy something as cheap as possible and then if they sell try to get as much as they can, but when someone else offers them something for sale that seams higher than you think it should be, you think they are ripping you off?
