I have talked about this before, but the account of Abraham sacrificing Isaac is terrible. I could never show that page in the Bible Stories Book to my children. (they eventually saw it) Horrible account. What parent could read that to their child? And..........I was a TRUE believer. That one always hurt me too much.

I didn't like that one, and the one about Jepthah's daughter I liked even less. There the poor girl really does get sacrificed, although in the WTBTS watered down version she only has to serve God as some sort of temple priestess for the rest of her natural life.

    That really bothered me.

Ditto on Kenpodragon's post. I refuse to allow a Bible in my house.

You can stop hurting. Abraham didn't carry through. He killed a ram instead. Isaac is fine. Him just kicking back waiting for the resurrection....

Coincidently, I just updated the "Bible Quotes" section of my JW Quotes website. I have a few doozies there (http://quotes.jehovahswitnesses.com/bible_quotes.htm). Here is what we can learn from the "Holy Book" (remember this the next time the JWs or others come knocking:

    • It is OK to sell your daughter into slavery, as long as you do it right (tip: try to get her that great "concubine" gig!)
    • If you work on the sabbath, YOU WILL BE KILLED (JWs and most others ignore this one)
    • You can NOT eat shellfish, because it is "unclean." But you CAN eat locusts and grasshoppers, because they are clean (I will try to remember that the next time I'm at Red Lobster restaurant).
    • A menstruating woman is UNCLEAN, and anyone touching her is also UNCLEAN (I guess you have to ask every woman you meet if she is having her period, just in case!)
    • God doesn't like the handicapped -- they are NOT allowed to go to alter to present burnt offerings. God does not agree with our modern concept of "accessibility".
    • It is OK to have slaves, as long as they come from "the nations around you". (I gues that means I can have American and Mexican slaves, but not Canadian slaves)
    • A stubborn and rebellious (teenage) son SHOULD BE KILLED by STONING (I guess that is the nasty version of "Scared Straight" -- they called it "Scared Stiff")
    • No wearing of clothes meant for the opposite sex (that should keep my wife from stealing my t-shirts!)
    • No tassels on your clothes! (Damn, there goes my halloween costume!)
    • A newly wed bride should bleed like a stuck pig so that it marks the sheets. The bloody sheets prove she was a virgin. If the sheets aren't bloody, then SHE WAS A WHORE, SO KILL HER (with stoning, naturally).
    • Extramarital sex = death to BOTH parties. Take that, Jimmy Swaggart!
    • If a man rapes a virgin, his punishment is to pay off the girls father and take her as his wife (I guess that will teach him, now won't it!)
    • No one with "crushed testicles" can enter the congregation.... was there so many people like this that they had to make a rule about it?
    • No bastards in the congregation -- if JWs disallowed "bastards", there would be no more elders
    • If a woman breaks up a fight between her husband and another man, and touches his "privates", HER HAND MUST BE AMPUTATED.
    • Saul is instructed to wipe out Amalek, which he does (every man, woman and child -- can you say GENOCIDE?) but takes pity on the farm animals and keeps them. Jehoobee is enraged at Saul for showing this "compassion" -- to the animals
    • Ezek 23 spends a lot of time talking about "lusty prostitutes" who "defile themselves" with "dungy idols". I guess if they made this part of the bible into a video, this section would be rated XXX.

I find nothing about the Bible disturbing.

What is disturbing, is that most here find the Bibles "in your face", "hide nothing" honesty disturbing.

These things did happen, and the writers, unlike some of todays writers told the truth, and this comes across as something that should be ridiculed or spoken of in jest ?

Maybe the biblical writers should have sugar coated everything, as the Society often did with the " Gods too good make a place like hell " speach. There are times where the truth really sucks, but I'd still rather hear it, then a lie.

There is a whole other Testament that everyone seems to be ignoring, its called the New Testament. Read it, especially the women here that seem to think God hates them, I think you get the direction I'm going in.

This is the perfect example of what orginized religion does to good peoples minds, maybe if more of you hadnt been lazy to the point of allowing yourselves to be spoon fed all that you believed about God, and had actually spent some time researching his word on your own, you would have never gotten to the point of hating Him, or no longer believing.

Just one quick note, can anyone here explain to us what biblical slavery really was ? Any hands ?

Please stop adding your own modern meaning into written history, biblical slavery wasnt like the evil of modern day black slaves, now that was truely horrible.

    Anyone ?

Oh and Quotes, stop attributing mans traditions, which by the way Christ spoke against, to it being one of Gods rules or laws.

Try reading the original Hebrew, instead of todays versions of the Bible, why you might ask ?

Example, original hebrew speaks of dragons (dinosaurs) roaming the earth, and even flying dragons (dinosaurs), behomoths (dinosaurs) with tails the size of cedar trees, yet our evolutionist revision gives us, hippos, birds and crocodiles. Hell, its always easier to just fit in, and be liked by everyone, and I see one big love fest going on here.

Its cool to believe in nothing, hell, then your not held accountable for the damage you do to others as you walk through your selfish little life.

When was the last time any of you did anything for someone unselfishly, as a missionary does. Laid your lives on the line for an unknown person, or tried to make a difference. Until you do, your humanist philosophies mean nothing but self soothing talk, sounds selfish eh ?

    robbydobbs,

Pretty proud of your own opinions eh?

***These things did happen, and the writers, unlike some of todays writers told the truth, and this comes across as something that should be ridiculed or spoken of in jest ?***

Yeah robby just because you say so, we will just take your word on the matter. Your entire post wreaks of self agrondizing 'Iam good, your bad" mentality of every religious zealot I've ever known.

No you should be ashamed for the blatant attempt at promoting the same 'guilt trip' the wtbs has used for over 120yrs to keep the r&f in line.

For all your pontificating about the bible being true, about 'slavery' in bible times, being different than 'black slavery', you offer not one shred of evidence. Just your own emotional blackmail. The same blakmail utilized by every religion...THE BIBLE IS GOD'S WORD, BECAUSE IT SAYS SO.

So robbydobby you are in fact the one who should be ashamed, you have offered no clear decisive reasoning about the TRUTHFUL origin of the bible, just emotional rhetoric, so typical of most fundementalists who's only claim to fame is "Jesus loves me, this I know"........."the bible tells me so". Yeah.

    Danny
