Rmember, They Walk Among Us

    Crazy people walk among us.

They may drive cars, own houses, raise kids and hold jobs.

I have personally known psychotic people who appeared to be normal in every respect
    - EXCEPT when you talked to them at length. They had 25 kids (actually none),
had a detailed military record including combat ( washed out in boot camp)
and had people sneak into their houses to remove objects - and replace them
    later.

I'm not kidding - I think many of you may not have had the experience of personally
having psychotic friends who are superficially normal. Some folks have hallucinations
every day - but learn to ignore them or NOT TALK ABOUT THEM to avoid embarrassment.

OK, I don't want to prop myself up as 'superior' here because we're ALL a little
nuts - depending on your viewpoint.

A man claims a mysterious unseen power is changing lizards into birds.
    He is:

a biology professor teaching evolution or
    a fruitcake having visions? Which?

A prominent politician believes people can rise from the dead. He is:

    totally nuts - or
totally Christian - take your pick, according to your own value system.

The legal system tries its best to figure out What Really Happened
and Who Will Pay For It. They need real dead bodies, corroborating witnesses,
    and hard physical evidence

    otherwise, I can guarantee you
old Brother Bell in the Legal Dept
will roll on the floor, laughing his a$$ off
hearing the phrase "Satanic Abuse" AND KNOWING - relative to his VALUE SYSTEM

that such testimony isn't worth a judges time, under cross examination.

    LIFE IS RASHOMON !!!!!!
    and
PEOPLE ARE CRAZY ( including me, sometimes)

GodSpeed to those with hard evidence

    agree with you.....

we have to keep an open mind both in logic and compassion, for both sides of this. We can be skeptics and compassionate at the same time. Give everyone a chance to speak, but do so cautiously. Saying the wrong thing could destroy years of hard work, and weaken a reputable stance on an issue.

I have recently been dealing with a business complaint from a person who claims to be a forensic auditor (he actually can't even spell it). He also claims to have been personally appointed by George Bush as an air marshall - this despite the fact that he is Canadian.

In reality, he lives in a welfare apartment and appears to subscribe to the philosophy that if you are a big enough ass hole, people will give you money to go away.

I have even heard that some people believe they are God's chosen ones, and will be the only survivor into a new world after God kills everyone else. Scary

    Yep - they're everywhere.

    Metatron,

Yes, I know someone like that. If you ask him about his research on seat belt safety measurements, as (former) GM engineer, you would never know he had a problem.

If you get to know him, and let him ramble, he will tell you that he is a Cardinal in the Catholic church, a captan in the Navy (he has never served in the military), and he is running for President in ten years (he is on medical disability). He once believed that his father had hired me to put him under survielance. He believes that his buick is equiped with surface to air missles. It is very sad to talk to him. I knew him before he became mentally ill.

    Larc,

People often look at a loony person and conjecture that the loon must have done something terrible to become a loon. Do you know what I am talking about?... 'I'm glad I haven't lost my sanity! Pity that poor fool!' Do most people really think the mentally ill exist through some fault of their own?

So what responsibility do people have to avoid mental illness? Besides the obvious, avoiding drugs?

There are a few major personality disorders in my building. As long as they don't mess up taking their meds on time they're fine and rather pleasant to talk to. Well, maybe the drugs help. But to me, or IMO, I think Alzheimers has got to be the most frightening illness for someone to have.

I see a few with that and it hurts to see them that way. I can't imagine one minute being ok and then a minute later being completely lost not knowing or remembering where you are or even recognizing your own children or spouse etc. Sometimes the look one their face is heartbreaking and there is nothing yet that can be done to fix it. Whats even more horrible is hearing of people afflicted with it who are being abused by their own children or abused in nursing homes.

    Cello,

There is no way of avoiding the type of mental illness my freind has. It is genetic.
