Lol Farkel- Great thread. You took the thoughts on Adam and Eve right out of my head (maybe that explains my recurrent migraines), with some more points to add. The Bible says that Eve was deceived. She was fooled man, utterly stumped. So why did she die forever and ever (she grieved the holy spirit?) for something she didn't even entirely understand she did? Also, Adam was the head, so why did he take the fruit from Eve on her prompting? He was the boss, he could have said no. Instead he ate, then blamed her when God came calling. But like you said, why did they even have to be tested in the first place if God trusted that he made a perfect human race that would serve him without fail. And why even offer them free will if it wasn't okay to have a difference of opinion?

I love your point on the disappearance of the garden of Eden. I'm with you-if I saw an angel with a flaming sword, you bet your boots I'd be compelled to believe and obey. Why are we supposed to go on blind faith and a vague threat that if we don't comply, we will be roasted at armageddon? Especially when there are numerous versions of what is the "true" way to serve God properly(I've been figuratively killed by people of a number of religions for not believing as they do). It's kind of a paradox-we're supposed want to serve a God that we can't see, while rejecting "abnormal" fleshly erotic feelings that we poor imperfect schmucks end up having occasionally from the things we DO see.And meanwhile try to cultivate a relationship with a God who likes to play hide and seek.

It all gives me a headache. But I still wonder why the concept of God is out there, and if one or more exsist.Did God invent humans, or did humans invent God? It's the chicken and egg thing.

Right now, I'm enjoying an audio version of one of Stephen Hawking's works. Thanks for the recommendation-it makes my drive to school insightful.

    RE: Solomon..

I try to boil down everything to their simplest forms.. IMO, everyone born is given a gift or two from God. As we go about our lives we either gain/develop more gifts or we lose them for one reason or another. With regards to Solomon, obviously his gift was that of Wisdom, and it is my belief that he possessed, or was touched by (or how ever you want to say it) a small portion of the "light"/"energy" of God...in other words, it was the ultimate "hookup". When he was obedient to the commandments, he continued possessing the 'gift' (light/energy). When he started to do things his way, the "hookup" to the "light" became dimmer and dimmer until there was very little left, that's when things started to go south.

Re: Adam and Eve... I feel what we read, and thus try to comprehend, is a VERY minute "tip of the iceberg" of what really happened... therefore the continuing unanswerable questions (at least for now).

    My 2 cents.

obviously his gift was that of Wisdom

No. Nothing "obvious" about it. If Solomon was wise, we today have zero reason to believe so.

Give an example of "obviously" extraordinary wisdom on Solomons part. If you can't, then why did you say that?

Say What? I was speaking about how everyone is given a gift. The "obvious" isn't my opinion, I was merely stating the obvious (excuse the pun) from what was common knowledge about him - "that" for which he was noted. Even today, you don't have to believe in God, the Bible, or a prize in a cracker jacks box to know that when one speaks of "Solomon" it is synonymas with "wisdom".

People have wisdom, but it doesn't follow that it makes you 'good'. "....be as wise as serpents"

Re: Adam and Eve. God doesn't desire man to live by his knowledge of good and evil - see "grace". What the Lord asked of was sort of like about the wts - " who told you you were naked?" So they had lost their Eden - " a secure mind is like a garden ".

Check out the cherubim, who they are - they're still in the east of the garden - and people enter. ( (major smile))

I agree that Solomon was not very wise. Why did he get such good press? It is very simple. The writers were sitting at his table and eating his food. The system was not unlike that which operated in Elizebethian England. Artists, writers, journalists, biographers had patrons. It was the only way they got to eat on a regular basis. If you want to please your patron, you say nice things about him. Otherwise, your income dries up. As Saint Satan has pointed out, Soloman laid such oppressive taxes on his people that it was perhaps the main cause for the division in Israel. The religion thing didn't help either, but the taxes probably were the main problem.

The Bible was written for men of faith

God has never attempted to prove or debate things that he says is true.

A man either accepts or rejects them. Free will was never intended to mean freedom from the consequences of bad choices. We are creation. We are interactive players in Gods game of life. The Bible says in the beginning God created the heaven and the earth. There is everywhere evidence that this is true. Wisdom is in believing God. It is in letting God be found true though every man a liar. This also means that when our own personal opinions conflict with what the word clearly says we must frame things in a way that is consistent with all that God says about the matter so that God is found true.

The problem with so many ex-JWs is they foolishly believe that the problem JWs have is their belief in God. To be free of JWs to them being likewise free of God. This is a greatly foolish decision akin to throwing the baby out with the bathwater. They choose of their own freewill not to believe God and then want to be shielded from the consequences of their foolishness.

This reminds me of a new movie being constantly advertised on TV called "JackAss".

People are doing the most insanely stupid and dangerous things. Who are they going to blame when they get themselves seriously hurt. Is the insurance companies going to pay their medical bills? Are they going to be able to sue somebody like stupid tabacco smokers are successfully doing against the tabacco companies for damage they incur? Heck No. The Bible clearly says Solomon was the wisest of men of his day. We can but believe or reject this fact.

There is mountainous evidence from both biblical and secular sources for anyone willing to believe. Wisdom is like righteousness and being a friend of God has nothing directly to do with morality. JWs have releaed a booklet on "How to Be Gods Friend". In it they make the same mistake as they did in the previous booklet "What God Really Requires Of Us". Salvation and righteousness ( being a friend of God ) is by faith alone and has nothing to do with morality.

Do we want to be wise like Solomon by trusting in God or do we want to be Jackasses acting foolishly denying the creator.

Did not solomon take on all those women partly to form alliances w other nations and tribes? Did he not increase the number of horses and chariots? Did he not kill off possibly competing alternate candidates for kingship? Did he not break promises when it became inconvenient to keep them? So, where was this trust in his god? Looks like he did so only in word. In deed, he trusted in force and strategy, like any other cunning leader.

I myself am tearfully appreciative of and believe I have been accepted as a friend of God and given special privileges of service and gifts to go along with them. They are far more than I deserve being the sinner past and present that I am. I am in the company of men like Abraham, David, Samson, Jehu, on and on. Morality was never the criteria for men who served him. They all were sinners to various degrees. It was their trust in God to always help them that qualified them for rewards.

This is the real good news to be preached. Salvation and friendship with God is by faith alone. Solomon wisely knew that and though he had many fleshly weaknesses alike his father he trusted and depended on God to help him and God did. Even when he was doing immoral things.

We can always leave and walk out on God but he will never walk out on us if we believe, have faith and trust in him.

I submit that faith/belief are also not necessary to recieve god's benevolence.
