When You Hear Someone Say "The Truth"...

Minimus,"The Truth","Present Truth".Phases like these that you hear all the time are misquotes from the book of 2 Peter1:12 "For this reason I shall be disposed always to remind you of these things, although you know them and are firmly set in the truth that is(" present in you"). Here the emphasis is not that one is( in the Truth,) or has( present Truth) but rather that the "TRUTH"is( inside a person.)So when a JW.say I'm in "The Truth,"it does not mean that "The Truth" is( In Them.)A pioneer sister used to ask me ,"This is the Truth isn't it brother?"What they are really saying and asking is that the WT. Society is the True Org,and they are in the Org.so they are in the truth. Thus they are equating the Society with the truth, which it is not.But you knew this already, and that's not the thrust of your question. No, it does not bother me when they say that expression because I know where they are coming from, and about their misunderstanding about what the Truth really means.Blueblades

When I hear that phrase I get a put down feeling, sort of like they are being elitist, not that they are aware of what they are doing given they are under the influence of the wt and have been indoctrinated by cult practices.

In a discussion about doctrinal flip-flops, my JW friend used the "old light/new light" parachute. I then asked, "So as it stands now, does the Society have the complete truth, or the incomplete truth?" After much umming and awwing he had to admit "incomplete truth", for if they had the complete truth, there would be no more Scripture research necessary up at HQ nor any "new light" for any future doctrine change. He had to then internalize the realization that they in fact don't have the truth that they proclaim. Then ask, "Why would you knowingly belong to and spread a religion to which you ascribe partial truth to?"

    Hi Minimus,

I never liked to use the term "in the truth" even when I was an elder. I always thought that it hypocritical to say we had "the truth" when the KGB was always coming up with new understandings of what JWs were supposed to believe. Therefore, it doesn't bother me when JWs say they are "in the truth" when they believe the lie.

I had two old dears call on me a couple of days ago. They were dressed head to toe in tweed and had what can only be described as tea-coseys for hats.

As I answered the door Sister A went into her presentation and shoved the 'panda' tract towards me. Now I usually just say I'm not interested but for some reason I said "oh its o.k. my dad's an elder in a local congregation"

Well they knew him and said they'd seen him at the last Circuit Assembly. Then Sister A asks "Do you still go ?". "errr no." I replied.

Then Sister B, the sterner looking of the two looked me straight in the eye and said "Did you just leave The Truth?"

I thought two things - first they'd used a buz word with me and second the tone of her voice meant she had already condemned me!

"Well I didn't believe it anymore so I just left" I replied. They had a shocked look on their faces. They thanked me for my time and left.

City Fan...the look can speak volumes, can't it?!

I don't refer to it as The Truth anymore (and isn't it funny how when you say "The Truth" it is capitalised in your mind?! or is thatjust me? LOL) but call it the church when talking to my family that are still in. I particularly like the Borg tag...says so much with so little

Ah, minimus, where've ya been, mate? We've missed your questions!!! Seemed quite dull without them! What would we do without them. I found myself quite sad you've been absent, so glad you're back, old son. Now, what's the next question?

    Cheers, Ozzie
