Woman finishes college after 57 years
    Associated Press

SARASOTA, Fla. - Bernice Strickland started college in 1945. She finished Tuesday.

Strickland, 76, was the oldest of 202 graduates receiving bachelor's or master's degrees from the University of South Florida during commencement exercises Tuesday night. Strickland majored in English and American Literature.

"I taught her five times, and she never missed a class," said literature professor Susan Harrington. "That was remarkable."

Strickland, a retired kindergarten teacher, left the Florida State College for Women - now known as Florida State University - in 1947, and didn't resume taking classes until 1995, when she enrolled at Indian River Community College in Stuart.

She had no computer skills and had never read a William Shakespeare play. Now she's a literature graduate, one who got mostly A's at USF.

Strickland said she always had wanted to complete her degree and decided to make those plans a reality after her husband, Lantis, died.

"When he passed away, I wanted something to do to pass the time," she said. "I decided then it was time to go back."

I'm currently taking courses to complete an Associates degree in Business Administration that I started work on 15 years ago.. I'll be taking the final course to complete the degree in the spring semester. Also in the spring semester, I'll be taking the first course toward my new goal, a Bachelors degree in Biblical Studies.

    Ruby:

You already wrote me but thought I would answer I am in community college and finished my first sememster, I passed with a 3.5 and am tickled purple! I also had a teacher that submitted an excerpt from my novel(not to be confused with the novel my husband has written and getting published not sure I'll ever get my done LOL) to the creative writing teacher and she waived the prerequisite for her class YEA!!!! She loved my writing, which is so weird cause I never would show anyone until I put a poem I wrote on Silent Lambs for the victims.

I see people my age (errrrr 38ish) and older at the school so Ruby go for it. I'm getting my associates then I will transfer to Park and gor for either PR or Graphic Design.

I think I enjoy it more knowing I was told I couldn't do it for so long!!!

When I finally graduated with my Bachelors, I went on to law school for a year and got a para-legal certificate.....then I realized I do not want to do that....what a waste of $7000. Live and learn.

Now I am self employed. I do HTML advertising and web site maintenance for real estate agents. I do like being self employed. Much better.

Now I want to go back and study philosophy. Not for a degree, just to learn. I had 1 class during my sophomore year and really liked it.

I was going to be a gigalo, until I met this really great girl. Things look quite promising for us. As for other plans, I'm finishing up my Electrical Maintenance course, I have a great job in electronics, and I'm in a hard rock band. Better than going door to door for the rest of my life.

That is very nice if she has a college degree at 57 years old, but she will never be hired.

If a man/woman goes to college and comes out at 45 years old for example, what company will want to hire him/her?

Where I live, companies are not even interested in hiring above 35 years of age.

So if you want to go back to school, it's your choice, but don't expect the company where you apply to see things your way. They have their own criteria in hiring.

I'm talking about my corner of the world. Maybe it's different elsewhere.
