    Xandra,

Your family history should be very interesting. Did your family migrate to Mexico from Spain, or were they decendents of the Mia or Aztec indians? Would love to hear more about you family history.

Well, let me tell you a bit about my family. On my father's side, both his parent's ancestors fought in the Revolutionary War. Both were Scotch-Irish, and both survived the war. My grandmonther's name was Sunderland and by grandfather's and of course my name is Thornton. Both families migrated due west from the east to Ohio. My mother's family goes way back in North Carolina. The family did not move to Ohio until about 1920. There is a lot of information on my mother's mother, Greganus, but not much on my mother's father, Teal.

WOW Carl! Have you even been to any of those "Sons of the revolution" Meetings? Or are those just for daughters? Was your family one of the first settlers here in the USA? Did they come on the Mayflower by any chance? I'd really like to hear more.

See, everyone has something interesting to tell and like I said, I love history, so keep it coming guys.

Lilacs, I can trace them back as far as 1750, so I don't know when they came to this country. Their surnames are not in the Mayflower records, so I know they don't go back that far. There was a Matthew Thornton who was the last to sign the Declaration of Independence. He lived in New England, however, and was not part of our family. There is also a Thornton family in Virginia that was well to do and had officers in the Revolutionary War, but they are not part of our family either. I suspect that the actor Billy Bob Thornton came from this family, but I don't know for sure. There is a Sons of the American Revolution. Their headquarters is in Louisville, Kentucky. I have visited there and found nothing about my family. However, my wife found an entire book about her mother's family, the Combs. They lived in Eastern Kentucky and her branch moved to Ohio in the 1940's. Here father's ancestors, the Mattingly's came to the States in one of two ships, The Ark or The Dove. They were Irish Catholic and were the first settlers in Maryland, the Catholic area established by Lord Baltimore. After the Revolutionary War, 40 families and two priests moved from Maryland to Kentucky near Bardstown. In Bardstown today, the name Mattingly is as common as Smith and Jones in other parts of the country. My wife is probably a distant cousin of the pro baseball player, Mattingly, who is from Maryland.

That's quit a family history, Carl. My family all migrated here in the late 17 early 1800's. My great great Grandfather was a banker, that much I do remember. I need to find that book( I took moms copy) so I can jog my memory on my family history.

    Thanks for sharing, Carl.

Awesome photos! I wonder why people looked so grim in the very early photos?

I've got a photograph from the 1890's of my great-grandparents on their wedding day. Unfortunately I don't know how to upload it correctly.
