Bendrr, that is a point I agree with too,,,,,,, about the drugs....... they will never , never control drugs.

People get caught making drugs , selling them, they pay their fines, go to jail and get back on the streets and do it even more.

In the prisons here drugs use is rampant.......... now how does that happen. The law enforcement is not even working in that controlled enviroment. They allow it to be a big thing in the prisons. Anyone who has served time can tell you , you can get any drug you want , for the right price or favor.

I guess it is just cultural differnces here, in the usa, than the UK,,,, that is for sure. Some say they don't have to worry about protecting their homes. Most of us live in places things are pretty safe,, but here you can live in a gated community and you still might be targeted. Especially is some crack head needs a fix and something to steal. They would just as soon shot you, cut your throat for your TV, than to do without their drugs. Most of the problems with guns , the shootings, are in direct connection with drug use. It is very bad here.

Where do they get these guns??? They are not just stealing them from the common homeowner, who happens to have one,,,,, say a .38 or other handgun, they are packing the automatic uzza, and you can't buy those , supposedly, they are illegal. I wonder where they are getting them from? Maybe from other places other than america,,,,,,,, they ship drugs , they can ship guns too.

IMO,,,,,,,, the bottom line is ,,,,,,,,the usa will never control criminals from getting guns,,,,,,,, so if all the non criminals who want a gun for what ever reason, who may not ever fire it,,,,,, are not allowed to have one,,,,,,,,, what difference would that make? The criminals will have the upper hand for sure then..... and the person who would use a gun only for self defense would be an easier target.

It's not about crime. It's not about crime stats. It's not about criminals who use guns.

It's about: Who the hell is anybody to take away my choice to protect myself and/or my family.

Sure, somebody breaks in to your house and wields a baseball bat...what are you going to do? Oh I get it, you just say,"Please roving murdering psycho, please don't kill me...let me call the police first and wait 10 minutes (an hour if they are busy) whilst you wait and surrender yourself". I'm sure they'll oblige to such request, after all, criminal minds work in such a way.

I guess we should ban cars too. I mean after all, criminals steal them and go joy riding often killing people. Knives? Baseball bats? Rope? Let's add some more shall we? I mean come on! Maybe we should require citizens to wear boxing gloves, this way when roving bands of unarmed gang members take their sweet time when kicking and punching people to death.

Oh wait? What is that I hear? Only let the Police, Federal Authorities, and Military have guns? Sure why not. I was watching some old black & white news reels about how this country instituted such fire-arm control...I couldn't understand it...because it was IN GERMAN! I mean after all, government authorities are to be trusted, governments can never abuse such a responsibility of the only ones being armed.

Murder rates? Think they will go down? Ha...HAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHA! Jeez, please, don't tell me you've been sold on THAT ignorant pile of special interest crap! One thing we humans do is invent new ways and methods as to what we want to accomplish. Sure, let's say we ban guns, on this alone. Watch the "bludgeoning with blunt object" murder rate sky rocket! Or poisoning, or strangling, or....add some more please!

Yep...banning guns sure abolishes a lot of problems, the problems that stand in the way for criminals and governments to achieve their goals.

As to the opinion of gun-ban happy people from Netherlands (or any other nation) blah blahing about U.S. citizens' rights as to have firearms: Who give a flying leap what you think. Go jump in a lake, preferably one in your own country.

And for the people who like to revision history and play with the words in the 2 amnd. of the Constitution: Since it's draft, I still don't see your argument being enforced. Citizens still have their guns for 200 some odd years now, nothing has changed. Guess everybody doesn't see it your way. Too bad. :P

    Two Problems with 'gun control'

    1) The Assumption that criminals will stop shooting people if guns possesion was illegal. Why would they? Murder, attempted murder, assult, drug possesion, stealing, etc..etc..etc.. are all illegal and yet they still do it. Its as if people believe a criminal would say, "Wait, I better not shoot this guy with a gun, its illegal, let me get my crowbar and cave his skull in, no wait, thats illegal too. Oh I guess I better leave him alone, I wouldnt want to do anything illegal."

    2) There are already 200 Million+ guns in the U.S. You are NEVER going to get rid of them. You could pass all the Laws in the WORLD and people are still going to use guns. If you had made possesion of Firearms ILLEGAL in 1680 then maybe you wouldnt have them around!

    3) Yes, I said 2, but this one is a problem depending on your viewpoint- Our Culture. GUNS ARE AMERICAN CULTURE. REMEMBER FOLKS THAT ALEXANDER HAMILTON- ONE OF OUR COUNTRIES GREAT FOUNDERS- DIED IN A DUEL!!!! Its in our BLOOD. I realize that our Foriegn friends will not understand that, but our country is based on FREEDOM. We like to do whatever we want!

Now many people hate the 2nd Amendment becuase it protects our rights (Depending on which judge is ruling). Well sometimes I hate the 1st Amendment that allows the Realens to clone babies so they can live forever. I hate Satanists 2 but theyre protected. The F-in KKK is protected by the 1st Amendment. Those bastards are out there every month burning crosses and killing minorities but you dont see anyone trying to get rid of the 1st Amendment now do you??? Lets not get into porn, racism, facism..etc..etc.. which is all protected by the 1st Amendment.

Do I like the fact that murderers get off on stupid crap? do I like OJ having a Lawyer? Do I like the fact that Terrorist have rights??? NO but its in the Constitution and im not going to change it.

It all comes down to the fact that WE were OPRESSED as a people when we founded this country and we made DAMN sure when we wrote the Constitution that the Govt would not go around butchering us. If anyones to blame for the Violence it the BRITISH who started the shit in the first place. I realize the our foriegn friends do not understand our concepts of INDIVIDUALISM, FREEDOM, and RIGHTS, but what do you expect from people who have been serfs and subjects throughout history.

I still say, lets enforce the laws we already have as oppossed to making new laws. Just to stir the pot a bit though. People who own guns are twice as likely to die from a gunshot than those who don't. Now, ya gotta figure that suicides are quickly figured into this, as are all gang shottings etc. Still, depending on what area of the country I live in, I will keep a gun in the house, though I don't at this time.

    Simon,

You're point about arrests for carrying guns. The law in the US provides for punishment of those carrying weapons who don't have a concealed weapons license. Enforce that law, and make it stricter.

To whomever asked...most of the gun laws in the US are state and local, though the feds have a number of gun laws too, mostly dealing with transfer of weapons etc.

"It is because the people are citizens that they are with safety armed. The danger (where there is any) from armed citizens, is only to the government, not to the society." Joel Barlow: Equality in America, 1792

"Gun control has not worked in D.C. The only people who have guns are criminals. We have the strictest gun laws in the nation and one of the highest murder rates. It's quicker to pull your Smith & Wesson than to dial 911 if you're being robbed." Lt. Lowell Duckett: Special Assistant to DC Police Chief; President, Black Police Caucus, The Washington Post, March 22, 1996.

"Laws that forbid the carrying of arms...disarm only those who are neither inclined nor determined to commit crimes.... Such laws make things worse for the assaulted and better for the assailants; they serve rather to encourage than to prevent homicides, for an unarmed man may be attacked with greater confidence than an armed man." 18th-century criminologist Cesare Beccaria in _On Crimes and Punishment_, 1764

    Passing this on:

    If guns cause crime...................

Why is it that WHEN GUNS WERE FAR MORE AVAILABLE TO KIDS THAN THEY ARE TODAY AND COULD BE ORDERED BY MAIL FROM COMIC BOOK ADS, NO QUESTIONS ASKED (Lee Harvey Oswald ordered his rifle from such an ad), kids didn't take them to school and kill each other?

Why is it that when many if not most public schools had NRA competitive shooting programs and kids carried their rifles to school, we didn't have mass killings in the schools?

Why is it that when WWII and Korean War souvenir machine-guns and hand grenades were literally lying around veteran's homes all over the country (my friends and I counted 17 operational machine-guns we knew of in my Chapel Hill, North Carolina hometown), kids didn't take them to school and kill anyone with them?

Why is it that when kids used to take their rifles and shotguns to school, park them in the principal's office, and then go hunting after school (very common in the South and rural areas), kids didn't shoot up the schools?

Why is it that when Israeli's carry submachine guns around on the street, they don't shoot each other over traffic altercations and Israeli kids take those guns and kill their classmates?

If civilians arent supposed to have military firearms, why has Congress maintained a program for 100 years to encourage civilians to own military firearms, to sell surplus military firearms to civilians and to teach civilians to become goods shots with those arms?

If civilians with guns are a public safety hazard, why does Israels Police Chief plead for Israeli citizens to carry their guns with them wherever they go?

If armed civilians dont reduce violent crime, why do criminological studies find that violent criminals are only afraid of armed civilians?

If civilians dont have a constitutional right to have guns and to use them for defense of themselves, their community and their country, why did Congress forbid Mississippi from rejoining the Union after the Civil War until it respected its black citizens right to have guns?

    You get the idea.

The Feds now have (Thanks to the Brady Bill) mandatory waiting periods for handguns and rifles. The states can have additional waiting periods and restrictions. I live in California and the Brady Bill really doesnt matter as we already have tons of restrictions. Many firearms that are legal in Nevada or Arizona are illegal in California due to our Assault Rife ban (which is different from the Federal Ban and a lot stricter). Funny how even with all these restrictions, California cities such as LA and Oakland still have the highest murder rates.

Fed laws also make machine guns and explosives possesion illegal (unless you have a permit or a Class 2/Class 3 license)

Concealled Weapon Permits are generally regualted by the States and Cities. States such as Vermont allow anyone to carry a concealled weapon (hmmm and they have a low crime rate) while California and New York are VERY ANAL about it. Here in Fresno, Ca you can get a permit if you transport alot of cash, are a jewler, banker,etc..etc.. but if you live in LA good luck.

"Guns don't kill people, people kill people"

Yeah ... but with a gun it's much easier.""

With all due respect, would you feel any better if they pushed their victim out of a second story window or used a knife?

    Ladeez and gentlemen!

Please note that I have not expressed an opinion at all in this thread so far, all you see is an item of news that I have reported. But, I do know about guns and have owned a few, although I now choose not to do so by the simple expedient of not renewing my gun licence when it became due in 1992.
