  For the record, this verse is not talking about a rape.

  KJV - If a man find a damsel that is a virgin, which is not betrothed, and lay hold on her, and lie with her, and they be found; Then the man that lay with her shall give unto the damsel's father fifty shekels of silver, and she shall be his wife; because he hath humbled her, he may not put her away all his days.

  When you look at other verses that deal with this situation, it becomes even clearer:

  
  

  Exodus 22:16-17 And if a man entice a maid that is not betrothed, and lie with her, he shall surely endow her to be his wife. If her father utterly refuse to give her unto him, he shall pay money according to the dowry of virgins.

  
  

  So, the man had to man up and pay up, regardless. If the father didn't think it was a good match, there was no marriage.

  It is a reminder of how women were viewed in that time and place-- as property. If you 'damage' a man's property by having sex with her (and thus making her verifiably a non-virgin), you had to pay the man the fee he would have otherwise gotten for selling her to her future husband. Men weren't going to pay top dollar for a woman who wasn't 'pure.'
