Francois, you are suffering a misconception... we don't HAVE guns at home. The only time in the past few years a firearm has been used in home defence was when a reclusive farmer living in an isolated farmhouse shot a 15 year-old unarmed burgler (like almost all burglers are here) . He went to jail, as in British law you can only defend yourself with equal force or lethality as you are attacked.
And please don't come the political freedom jive.... Eastern Europe freed itself from totalitarian government without guns. Quite what makes Americans so 'special' that they can only fight for polictical freedom with a gun, I don't know, it's special pleading and unviable in a serious discussion.
Having said that, for years I though that Americans killed each other in massive numbers with guns because they had massive numbers of guns.
I now know this is wrong, as the murder rate using firearms was six times higher in New York than in London in the 1900's, when the two cities had comparable gun control laws.
Broadly speaking, the murder rate using firearms in the USA is still 6-8 times higher than Europe.
So, American's don't kill each other in massive numbers with guns because they have massive numbers of guns. They kill each other in massive numbers with guns because ...?
Hell, I don't know why, and, funnily enough, it's hard to find Americans who are willing to debate on the topic of "Why Americans shoot each other six times more often than Europeans".
Why do you think Americans shoot each other six times more often than Americans? It's not due to the gun control laws, as I have demonstrated. Are Americans more violent, is life cheaper, are they enured to violence, is it a frontier society, is it culturally backwards, does a diet of burgers make you a murderer, are the police rubbish?
What do you think?
