As usual, I analyse everything to death.
I come from a farming community, so most kids learn the bare basics of driving a standard at five. This enables them to back a truck up to a building. I always thought that backing up a truck close to but not hitting a building was a weird choice for a first time driving skill. On the other hand, the building will stop the truck if something goes wrong!
Very soon, the kid is driving the truck across the farm at a crawl. As soon as he/she is old enough to reach the pedals, the kid is plowing fields with a tractor.
Being the youngest, I was spared from that until my body developed enough that I could actually see properly, instead of peeking through the steering wheel!

I was 21 when I learned to drive and just because my family insisted on it so that I could work in
the familybusiness.I failed two times on the tests, third time I succeeded in getting that dreaded licence...

I were 16, Brummie.
Don't worry too much about crashing into the car ahead. Avoiding it is easy enough as long as you pay attention. If you see that you're coming up too fast, step on the brake, but not so hard that you hear screeching sounds. If you think you can't stop in time, try to steer around the car. Failing that, stomp on the brake, close your eyes and hope for the best.

Stole my dad's car at 14 and got it back unscratched before he had to go to work in the morning. Got my drivers license at 16 shortly followed by my motorcycle endorsement. I've driven everything from a motorcycle to a 40 foot bus.
I've soloed 5 airplanes and never bothered to get a pilots license though I passed the written exam on the first try. By the time it came to take my flight test; my husband had the plane sold. Drat!

Sentinel, sorry your dad refused to let your mom drive, even worse that he put her down instead of encouraging her to go ahead and drive with confidence, no doubt he was proud of you though he didnt express it verbally.

Hey Brummie, I was 15 when I started to learn. I got my liscence on my sixteenth birthday. Two weeks later I was permitted to drive for my first time to school. My parents told me to go to school alone and come home alone. No passengers! Going wasn't a problem, no one knew I was going to drive that day. A couple friends asked for a ride home. I dropped two of my friends off and only had one more to go and I was home free..my parents will never know...well...I got one block from dropping my last friend off and some tapes we were playing fell on the floor. both of us started to lean forward and pick them up. When I lifted up, all I saw was two big red flashing lights from a dead stop school bus...OOPS..Thank God I was following it up hill for at least a couple minutes so I was going slow. I still crashed into it. There were about fifteen or more 10 year old girls on the bus. They all stuck there heads out the window shouting how stupid I was. Bus...Nothing. My mothers car...Crunched left fender. My father made me pay for and install a new fender and headlight. Moral of the story....Don't worry Brummie...it sounds like you won't have to deal with too many school buses where you live. You'll do fine!
