The higher up you go, the more of the hidden crap you see...

Have you noticed that the really committed religious men often wear that solitary pinky ring? It’s like a yell for “creepy-believer-that-doesn’t-really-believe”. It’s not just JWs. It seems to be in all religions. Some church leader gets older and then all of a sudden, out comes a pinky ring.

    13. What change in understanding of the identity of the higher powers was presented in 1929, and how did this prove beneficial?

13 In 1929, at a time when laws of various governments were beginning to forbid things that God commands or demand things that God’s laws forbid, it was felt that the higher powers must be Jehovah God and Jesus Christ. This was the understanding Jehovah’s servants had during the crucial period before and during World War II and on into the Cold War, with its balance of terror and its military preparedness. Looking back, it must be said that this view of things, exalting as it did the supremacy of Jehovah and his Christ, helped God’s people to maintain an uncompromisingly neutral stand throughout this difficult period.

Based on all available anecdotal evidence and the dumbass decisions the WT leadership makes, the only conclusion I can come to is that...

    ...they know it’s wrong...

    ...but believe it’s true...

    ...at the same time.

That is exactly how I felt when in. A strange concept but certainly possible.

How many really just believe in the lifestyle and social community and know that they have to profess "belief" to be part of that and keep their family contacts? ~ Simon

I believe (see how I did that) that this explains at least 50% of active JW's. It's their "lifestyle" just as any Catholic who goes to Mass "believes" all that rubbish. The majority of JW's cannot explain their beliefs. They just go along with the rest of the JW Crowd and remain in "awe" of the GB and the WT Leaders. You can't challenge a belief or have doubts about a belief that you can't even explain. Ask them any serious question that they can't explain and you'll just get an answer like: "Well......., I just know it's The Truth(™)".

I don't know what to say

I think looking at stuff like this for to long is not good for your mental health.

Poor JWs back then. They never figured it out.

I think the Mormon church can be used as a gauge for the level of belief in the JWs. It has been suggested that the activity rates for the lds could be as low as 30%. If this was the case, then the JW religion could be bigger, with a more engaged membership. This 30% figure gets worse, when you factor in those members that have a temple recommend. Unfortunately the church doesn’t publish these statistics, but I would suggest that it would be significant below the 30%. You could be 2-3 million who believe it enough that they have a temple recommend

No, I say that tbe main part of the 8 and a half million are firm in their belief. They may not know as much as we did in the past, but they believe in Armageddon and wang to live in the New World.

Of course there will be a certain number of youngsters who don't really believe and some old ones who have lost the plot and just keep going out of habit,.... but my experiences tell me that thease are relatively few..

I know for me I 100% believed it. It wasn't until I didn't believe it anymore that I started thinking about what I was actually believing in.
