    Hi Kes,
Good point about the d2d "urban legend". Also see
Acts 20 where the original Greek says "your Houses".
House is capitalized because he was telling them what
he had done, NOT what they should do. He taught
publicly, as the WT used to do by speaker car, public
forums and even, gasp, that evil radio thing. He taught
them in their snyagogs and in their Houses (big meeting
houses) NOT door to door. The Judge must have seen
the success of the Fuller Brush Co. hahahahahahaha

The WT's own Emphatic Diaglott translates as "Houses".
However the Kindom Interlinear borrows from, oh my god,
no it cant be true, no i don't believe it, that dastardly,
depiscable, evil King James version "houses". Then thru
neu lite "understands" it to really mean door to door.

    professor,

The apostle Paul was spearheading the Christian missionary activity. He was also laying a foundation for a work that would be completed in our 20th century. WT 01/01/89 p. 12

I'm at the office and don't have my '95 WT CD, but I believe the Tower took out the words "20th century," and replaced it with something generic on the CD and bound volume. Of course the Tower is dishonest and didn't indicate their little revision from the actual WT to the CD and bound volume. Most JWs don't keep the single issues, thus the Tower tries to hide their dirty little secretes.

I was baptised in 1989. The "20th Century" prophecy was being talked about by many of us. I remember even saying it on the doors. We thought it was a pretty brave prediction to make. But along came the recession of the early 90s and we got more confident. HUH.

    Hello Professor,

With all this free time on your hands, perhaps you'd like to come over to my hut this evening for a few experiments. MaryAnn will be out gathering coconuts with Gilligan, so we'll have plenty of time for research.

    Ginger,

    Welcome to the board.

Experiments? Coconuts? Research? Can I come too?

    Nice picture too.

    Professor,

If you come to my hut, perhaps we can discuss this scholarly treatise: http://www.bserver.com/bunker/gilligan.html

Here On The Island: A Scholarly Critique of the Style, Symbolism, and Sociopolitical Relevance of Gilligan's Island by Lewis Napper

Everyone thinks I'm just another pretty face, but I am interested in more than cosmetics and clothes. And I do find smart men tremendously sexy.

Without benefit of any huge bureaucracy or powerful tribunal, the castaways principally live in peace. More important than any traditional codification of laws is simply their collective treatment of one another. The series suggests that the key to successful life lies mainly in their own ingenuity to exist at ease with themselves, the elements and those around them. The peculiarities and blunders of each inhabitant are admitted and tolerated. Their differences are simply noticed and granted -- not violently opposed.

Even this lofty theme is not the primary thesis. The story is actually about something much more fundamental. The most remarkable message of the tale lies in the paradox of the concentrated lust of the castaways -- their burning desire to go back. Back to a time and a place that is more familiar and romantically remembered as “better.”

The tragedy of the tale is not that they can never go back. The real affliction is the wish itself. They are all so preoccupied with the notion of going back that they never realize they are already in paradise.

That was in January....by the time the bound volume came out, "20th century" was replaced with "in our time".

Java: you are correct. This prophecy was covered over in future reprints of this article. Note the explanation from AlanF on the H20 site:

The apostle Paul was spearheading the Christian missionary activity. He was also laying a foundation for a work that would be completed in our 20th century. The Watchtower, January 1, 1989, p. 12

Which words are not clear? The preaching work would be completed in our 20th century. No interpretation is necessary.

This material was written by one Gene Smalley of the Writing Staff. Smalley also happens to be the Bethel Librarian. He is known among Bethelites as a real ding-dong and an extremely nasty, unpleasant person. Smalley managed to get appointed in the early 1990s as a "Given One" largely because of his dishonest, bootlicking ways and his willingness to intellectually prostitute himself to various Governing Body members. Smalley was called on the carpet for writing this faux pas in The Watchtower. It got past the Governing Body because the sharper GB reviewers happened to be out of town during the regular review process, and the only one left was virtually senile. Given that the GB in principle ok'd the material, there wasn't much the GB could later say to Smalley.

You don't believe this stuff? Call Bethel yourself and verify it. Then report back here what you found.

After the dust settled, the Society changed the phrase "in our 20th century" to "in our day" in the bound volumes.
