The latest CO gem is, " Depression has nothing to do with spirituality and spirituality has nothing to do with depression".

Hrmph. As other posters have said, this Circuit Overseer knows zip about "stress". And, I doubt many Africans run around after each other carrying machetes. Besides, we call them Pangas here, not machetes!

I would agree with his statement. I have deep depression and have been trying to control it for some time now under the care of a doctor. Several in the congregation took it upon themselves to diagnose it as spiritual weakness - "poor brother 'Berean' he is so depressed because he is spiritually weak, he needs to be built up by being encouraged to be doing more in field service, bang on more doors, do more for the congregation and others, blah blah blah." What I needed was a break and to be left the freaking hell alone.

If you understood depression you would know that the CO's statement was correct. If, however, you are saying very high stress to be spiritual is causing some sort of problem that may aggravate depression there may be room for discussion. Berean

I think that many Witnesses are depressed BECAUSE of their view of spirituality, which happens to be their religion.

Actually I think the CO has got it right. But why on earth did he even have to talk about it? Why link the two? Control. Control.

I don't think it's coincidental that after persons become JW's, they get depressed. Do you???

As I have begun to understand how this organization works, I wondered if Gregory Bateson had then in mind when he came up with the idea of the "double bind" (being kept in a lose-lose situation) as the cause for schizophrenia. I was also startled to learn that there is a higher incidence of schizophrenia among JWs than in the whole population. I do think someone tending to depression would be made much worse by trying to be a good JW.

New South Wales Health Department statistics show that the Dubs have a higher incidence of mental problems than the general population.

I s'pose it could be asked whether those mental problems were caused by being in the borg or whether they would have been present anyway. Are those with some mental difficulties drawn to become dubs because of its promise of paradise on earth and so the prevalence of mental problems is higher in the borg? It would be an interesting study, but certainly there is a higher than normal incidence of such problems within the congregations.

    Cheers, Ozzie

Good one, Hamas! Imagine hearing commments like that! Sad thing is, the rank and file would probably go along with that too! Sad, because no real thinking is ever involved when the CO talks. Only taking notes and nodding your head, "YES".
