So, Do You Think You're Smarter Than Most?

Well, there are different sorts of "intelligence" aren't there? There is the academic intelligence of logic, mathematical ability, facts, figures and grammer. Then, there is the "creative" intelligence of music, art, humor and storytelling. Then there is the emotional intelligence of connecting with people, sizing up situations, displaying empathy and being self-controlled. Even these three categories could be sub-divided further.

I am rather on the intelligent side when it comes to most academic matters, most notably language, science and history. On the other hand, I have almost no "creative" intelligence -- certainly not any musical ability or any of the other "arts." I'm getting better on the emotional side of things more and more.

So, if I had to give a "yes" or "no" answer I would say "yes." But, again, this affirmation is completely dependent on the situation.

I have nothing to add when it comes to science or theology. I haven't put in the time to educate myself on these subjects. I always did very well at mathematics and music. (I play violin) I am very socially adept and have a reasonable understanding of politics. (Not comprehensive by any measure but above average for an American) I don't, at all, think I am more intelligent than most people. I may be more adept or versed on some topics than others and they, conversly, may be more adept at the topics I am not well educated in. That's what I like about this board. I get an edjamacation everytime I come here!

I have never been the smart one to ace all the school tests and assignments. I do not enjoy mind games that require much thought, like chess.

So, you might say that no, I am not the head of the class, per se.

But, I have people skills. I am self employed, and have owned my own businesses since I was 20 years old. I have street smarts, I have what it takes to survive day to day. I can and do make successful business decisions every day. I have spoken in front of thousands of people before, and will continue to do so in the futre. I can be a motivator at times. I am more ambitious than most, and therefore, I take whatever I do have, and work it to create the surroundings that I want for myself, my friends, and my family.

I never went to college, and did fair in high school. I think education is great, but it does not mean success. Taking what you do know, and applying it is what counts in my book.

    Prisca,

you're probably right about math being an exacting subject. You're probably wrong about 3+5 being always equal to 8. Sometimes I think I'm smart;at other times I'm dumb. Depends on the subject, and of course, the company I'm in.

Maybe in some higher level of mathematics (in physics, on a university level) but I was talking about average school maths. It's easy to get good marks in maths because once you get the basics down, you're set.

Were ALL smart in our OWN ways. When test time came in school, did the entire class get 100 % marks or just enough to pass?

Name me a school/college/university that teaches 'common sense".

Isn't it amazing that we all can express what being "smart" means, individually? Of course I know the word "smart" means many different things! What did you think? That I was stupid or something??? Now, don't say something that will make me "smart".....OUCH!
